How ‘Bout That: Poll Finds LA Blacks And/Or Latinos More Conservative Than White Voters

california_voters_6.25.09A poll conducted by the LA Times showed that voters in Los Angeles identify themselves differently than one might expect given national trends. Of the 1,500 people polled, 40% of white votes identified themselves as liberal versus 27% of black voters and 29% of Latinos. Also somewhat surprising was the fact that South LA voters were more likely to identify themselves as conservative - to the tune of 35%.

Of course, it’d be necessary to see exactly how many of the 1,500 people approached for this poll happened to belong to each race (the poll did not include heavily white, mostly liberal areas like Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, or West Hollywood).

It’s also important to realize the labels like “liberal,” “conservative” and “moderate” aren’t as meaningful as some would like to believe. People, and their beliefs, are complicated and don’t often fall neatly into categories. A voter can be described as liberal when it comes to economic issues, but be fiercely conservative when it comes to social issues like abortion or same-sex marriage. Or they may be for same-sex marriage, but vehemently against abortion. It isn’t neat.

In any case: Are you surprised at the poll’s findings?

NOT surprised. Something like 70% of African Americans voted yes on Prop 8.
