Latino Evangelicals Are Making The Rest Of Us Look Bad
11 June 2009, 4:15 PM. By Alex Alvarez
The National Hispanic Prayer Breakfast will be held in Washington D.C. June 17-19. GET EXCITED. The event will be attended by Latino evangelicals who intend on making everyone else look bad by praying harder, better, faster, stronger than any other Christian.
A survey conducted by the Pew Research Center’s Forum on Religion & Public Life shows that Latinos pray more than non-Latinos and that Latino evangelicals pray more than any other Christians. With more and more Latinos flocking to institutions like the Pentecostal church, it’ll be interesting to see what sort of role religion will play in the “browning of America.”
80% of Latino evangelicals pray daily, as opposed to 78% of non-Latino evangelicals and 59% of Catholic Latinos. Yeah, fine. But who wins in terms of guilt? Example:
We always see Latino Jehovah’s Witnesses praying before lunch at Wendy’s. Because we’re always at Wendy’s, alone, while everyone else is flaunting their little religious family unit in our face. WWJFD? Not that.

As much as the Evangelical Christian community makes me uncomfortable, I think this post is somewhat offensive. Offensive in the sense that we should acknowledge, and even be happy, about the fact that Latinos are not a monolithic unit. Duh, we guanabees know that we’re not, but it helps the mainstream when they see instances of diverse values/beliefs within the Latino community. Isn’t that, after all, what we would like to achieve: to not necessarily be seen as one same people. That there is a lot of diversity amongst us. I think we shouldn’t be afraid of visible Latino Evangelicals’ making us look bad, but instead, acknowledge the fact that Latinos no longer have to be perceived the same. Of course I wish our diversity would come out in a cooler, less conservative way- like how my tio is so obsessed with polka music that he dons leiderhosen every Thursday for his traditional dance circle- but in the end, I think, this is good for the image of Latinos as a whole. (PS I have no uncle who loves polka, but God knows we all have diverse interests. PPS Sorry to disappoint).
The title was meant to be facetious. Apologies if that didn’t translate.
You’re right. I was too eager to find fault. I appreciate the humor (especially since Evangelicals are so creepy), but I felt the post a perfect entre’ into this thought I had.
Perhaps I’ve missed something here, but how does a family at the next table praying before they eat make you look bad?
Because I’m a lapsed Catholic. Joke, people. It’s a joke.
Alex, you are hilarious. I hate it when b#$###@ flaunt their little religious family unit in my face too.
b#$###@ = bitches? bastards? bullshit? what the buttfucking hell do you mean?
