Picture this: Katie Couric is trying to tell you about the rising amount of hate crimes against Latinos in America. It’s a serious topic. You are listening intently, meanwhile Charo is sitting next to her on the couch cheerleading her pitch with “Dios mios” and “coochie coochies.” It’s Spanish-language journalism, people, and it feels an awful lot like a Geico commercial. And the best part is, it actually happened this afternoon when Univision anchor woman Maria Elena Salinas appeared on Escándalo TV to discuss a news special called, “Odio A Muerte,” that is airing tonight on the network. It’s a very serious topic, except that the white actors they hired to beat up a Latino, in some grand social experiment, couldn’t fool infants into believing they were a bunch of aliens from the planet Teletubby. Watch if you want to feel hopeless for your people.
