This Day In Latino History
18 June 2009, 9:45 AM. By Cindy Casares

On this day in 1895 Spanish supercentenarian Manuela Fernandez Fojaco was born in Llamas, in the municipality of Aller, Asturias. And she didn’t die until January of this year. That made her the fifth oldest person in the world. If there’s one thing Spanish old ladies know how to do, it’s hold on. The better for bitching at you when you date the wrong idiota, etc. But Manuela could not hold on long enough to become Spain’s oldest living person ever. She lost out by just seven days when she expired on January 6, 2009 at the age of 113 years, 202 days. Some things in life are just not fair. When asked how she made it so long, Manuela had this to say, “Live the present with enthusiasm and knowledge so you can adapt to the circumstances of each moment. Life is too short to take things to heart.”
