Sonia Sotomayor: “Affirmative Action Baby”

In a video from the early 1990’s that Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor gave to the Senate, she says that she is a “perfect affirmative action baby,” accepted to Princeton and Yale despite having shitty test scores. So, get ready for a month of the words, “Affirmative Action Baby” being slapped across your TV screen. Already, Fox News readers are commenting:

We’ll be honest. We’ve not always bought into the idea of cultural biases built into testing. We personally went to one of the poorest school districts in America and managed to come out fairly unscathed. But we thought about it recently. There are a lot of stupid people in America. Based on the population breakdown, a lot of those people are white. They run huge corporations (we’ve worked for some), they lead nations (this one, for example), and they become ridiculously wealthy doing so. Why? Not because they are smarter than some slacker asshole with a better brain who’s too lazy to jump through hoops. No, because they are scrappy and willing to jump through hoops. And, they have the right connections to get them to those hoops. Sonia Sotomayor, if in fact she’s not that smart, (a point that is sorely debatable), is no different from those white kids of average or below average intelligence except for the fact that, as a poor, Latina girl growing up in the projects, she had no connections to get her into Princeton and Yale. If the government hadn’t stepped in, there would only be dumb, wealthy, white “cowboys” getting into Harvard grad school after being rejected by the University of Texas because of their C-average at Yale.

With affirmative action, at least there are some smart Latinos and probably a whole lot of scrappy ones who, maybe don’t test as well, but they sure as hell can jump through hoops. Which is basically the same thing you can say for the white kids at the same institutions.
