So-So Effort: Conservative Talking Head Compares Sonia Sotomayor To J. Lo.
1 June 2009, 3:45 PM. By Alex Alvarez
In this post-racial, post-ethnic, Post cereal society in which we find ourselves, it was only a matter of time before someone, somewhere, compared Supreme Court Justice (Su-Co-Ju) Sonia Sotomayor to Jennifer “J. Lo” Lopez. Conservative blogger Debbie Schlussel penned a predictably articulate and well-reasoned post on the fact that Barack Obama simply chose Sotomayor because she is just like That Other Famous Puerto Rican Woman, Jennifer Lopez. Is it because they both enjoy eating the still-beating hearts of orphaned babies while howling at the moon? ‘Cuz that’s just what we’ve heard.
Writes Debbie, probably while stabbing a baby seal in the eye:
I can’t help but notice that the sole reason So-So (my very appropriate name for Sonia Sotomayor) was chosen as Barack Obama’s nominee for the U.S. Supreme Court is that she shares the life story of J-Lo, Jennifer Lopez.
In fact, the lyrics of the cheesy “Jenny From the Block” are basically the reason “Sonia from the Block” was chosen for the highest court in the land (minus the part about “put[ting] G-d first”). It’s just frankly, hilarious. Our President chose this chick because like, J-Lo, she’s a Puerto Ricana from South Bronx who went from rags to semi-riches. And that’s it. That’s the whole reason. What a joke. Guess I’m gonna have to refer to her as “Justice J-Lo,” once she gets confirmed by the Democrat dominated Senate. After all, neither J-Lo nor So-So have set any remarkable legal precedent in their lives. Neither have achieved legal greatness, and one of ‘em is about to become a legal Supreme.
She is obviously unfamiliar with Jennifer’s turn as a battered wife in Enough, in which she is forced to make her own law: THE LAW OF THE FIST.
Now, because of Schlussel’s track record and her overly dismissive tone here (”Puerto Ricana,” “semi-riches, ” “this chick”) we would place her firmly in the “Newt Gingrich Twitter Post Shock For Shock’s Sake School Of Punditry” and thus not give too much credence to her post. But we will say this to Ms. Schlussel: Try harder.
It’s not really that difficult to piss us off. Hell, it is built into the very fabric of our being. We regularly become enraged at the microwave for rendering a Hot Pocket soggy, despite our meticulous use of the cardboard microwave crispness sleeve. We see red when brokers describe Bushwick as “East Williamsburg” and we become pissed beyond belief when people set up toilet paper so that you have to off piece under the roll as opposed to over it. Basically, we are an angry, angry person. If you are seeking to upset us and it does not work, you really might want to consider rethinking your strategy.
“So-So”: Sonia From the Block a/k/a Justice J-Lo [Debbie Schlussel]

Oooooo, the toliet paper under gets my blood boiling!!!! It’s OVER people, OVER!!!!
I thought I was the only one!! I’ve been known to fix the toilet roll at other peoples homes.
That being the case I can never invite you over. LEAVE MY TOILET PAPER ALONE
AMEN!!!
I think she prefers to go by “Hey, Hispanic chick, lady” as shown by Glenn Beck (read: He-Hi-Ch-La).
Seriously, in “illegal alien,” these racists and their constant attacks are desgraciados. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m off the eat some empanadas and oppress the white man.
Although, I agree that the comparison between J-Lo and Sotomayor is trivial at best, one has to admit that choosing her was, in part, a way to rally hispanic support for the administration. That being said, J-Lo may be “hot-as-hell”, but I’d choose Sotomayor as a long term partner. She offers more stability.
Self-loathers like guest above kill me… Yes, she is Latina; yes, she has a rags-to-riches type story. But why does everyone assume that “woman” and/or “minority” means the candidate is inferior? She’s been both a district judge and a Circuit Court of Appeals judge, with more experience at the time of her nomination than ANY OTHER justice in history at the time of their nomination. She is on equal footing (if not above) with any other nominee or candidate. Given the equal footing in credentials, it’s not surprising that Obama would turn to other qualifications to decide on his nominee. Why are we inferring some calculating intent on his part by nominating a Latina justice? Don’t we all believe that the Court should be representative of the nation? There should have looooooong ago been a Latino SCOTUS justice, the fact that Obama is finally addressing that deficiency does not make him a panderer and does not make Sotomayor some kind of figurehead nomination.
I know this story is old - but I had to comment:
I thought I was the only one getting pissed at the ‘East Williamsburg’ stuff. It doesn’t exist people!! jajajaja
oh yeah and the TP pisses me off sometimes too :D
