Spaniards Show The Usual Cultural Sensitivity To David Carradine’s Death
4 June 2009, 5:45 PM. By Cindy Casares

When it comes to emotional sensitivity, we think the Spanish people were locked in the closet a lot as children. Take, for example, some of the reader comments on Spanish news site 20 Minutos about the news that Kung Fu & Kill Bill Vol. 2 star David Carradine was found hanged in his Bangkok hotel this morning–a tragedy in no uncertain terms.
daniel sam:
He’s with Mr. Miyagui.
4.06.2009 - 15.30 htomas lopez:
KUNFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
4.06.2009 - 16.30 hmalo:
Oh, no. Estoy kung-fundido con esta noticia.
04.06.2009 - 16.34 hOsKuRa:
Kill Bill.
04.06.2009 - 18.27 h
Interestingly, one commenter points out that someone on Wikipedia suspects this to be a publicity stunt for Kill Bill 3. Even we would be shocked by that.

Super callous, I’ll acknowledge. But I gotta admit: “Estoy kung-fundido”… is the funniest thing I heard all week. I lizzed almost.
Not so much a suicide as a terrible masturbation accident. (Autoerotic asphyxia)
Which is a really lame way to end up killing yourself in Baltimore, far less Bangkok where every sexual delight you can imagine (and quite a few that I am sure you can’t) is freely available. So I’m on the Spaniard’s side here.
“Every sexual delight you can imagine:” basically means that Bangkok has one hell of a child rape trade.
Seriously. It’s tragic.
Anyway, back to the wanker who whacked himself: the Spaniards have been notorious for being total assholes way before online anonymity. It’s part of their, uh, charm.
Is child rape what you imagine when you hear the words “sexual delight”? Because that is sort of sick. Also.
All news sites message posts are like that, the Spanish are not insensitive, jerks hidden by internet anonymity are. ( There is no need to point out the irony in the post Guana eds)
“When it comes to emotional sensitivity, we think the Spanish people were locked in the closet a lot as children”.
I really tried to stay away from this but…
Is it also your opinion that Mexicans are dirty and lazy, the Irish are drunks and the Jews moneygrubbers? Sterotype much?
No I’m making a reference to the many, many, MANY stories we do regularly on the cultural, racial and gender insensitivity seemingly institutionalized in Spain. Hence the link. Feel free to click it and see what I’m talking about.
I did click on the link and saw that you have done many stories portraying a stereotyped view of Spaniards. By comparison if you go over to CNN Money or whatever it’s called you will find that that idiot Dobbs does many many stories about Mexicans. And Azatlan.
And so on. Can we agree that he is at least chosing what he reports in a way that substantiates his preconcieved notions?
Do you see what I am getting at here?
Sooo…the many stories about Spaniards dressing in blackface at the racetrack to taunt a black driver or making slant eyes in their Olympic team photos and publishing those photos in the paper or telling female nurses they have to wear a short skirt or be docked pay–these constitute stereotypes of the Spanish? These are Lou Dobsian type stories? Sorry, but I think you’re reaching especially since we run many, many stories about the Spanish that are not highlighting those things. The truth is, the Spanish defend those acts saying they’re not prejudiced because racism, sexism, intolerance of others is pretty institutionalized in their culture. In general, Americans are at odds with most other countries about cultural sensitivity. Meaning, we at least feel guilty about not having it whereas other countries think we’re ridiculous hippies for even bringing it up. But on Guanabee, we also make fun of Mexicans and other Latin Americans for the same thing. During the Olympics, we had a recurring feature called Latinos hate Asians because of all the embarrassing racist journalism that was coming out of all the Spanish-speaking countries. We’ve also busted Mexico for being ridiculously homophobic in their media. And racist against blacks. So, yeah. We’re not isolating the Spanish. They’re just the ones in this story. Although, I will say more stories like this come out of Spain. Especially in the Sports arena. It’s really embarrassing.
Lou Dobbs is a particularly egregious example of what goes wrong when one makes sweeping generalizations.
Here is another example.
“Mexicans are homophobic”
But: In 2006 Mexico City’s assembly backed a law recognising same-sex civil unions, the first such in the country’s history.
Some Mexican jails permit conjugal visits by same sex partners.
Did you know that? I did not, until I googled “mexico news gay positive”.
My point here is that the truth is usually nuanced, written in shades of grey.
Many Spanish people are total insensitive asshats. I agree!
The Spanish as a people are insensitive asshats. I disagree!!
