Honduras’ President Is Now In Costa Rica
28 June 2009, 12:47 PM. By Daniel Mauser
The current President of Honduras, Jose Manuel Zelaya, was arrested and flown to Costa Rica this morning following a military-led coup.
200 elements of the military entered Zelaya’s residence and met resistance by the President’s 10 guards who were quickly overtaken.
A source of the military armed forces declared Zelaya’s arrest was ordered by the tribunals of the Republic for proceeding with an illegal act. The President was warned by the Supreme Court and the military not to continue with a poll he wanted to pursue to place pressure on the constitutional assembly to allow him to run for a second term on the November ballot.
According to the internationally recognized Honduran newspaper La Prensa, the military and the other branches of government strongly opposed the ballot for fear that it was just an excuse for the leftist President to extend his stay in power. Zelaya raised concerns among the Honduran people who many say has become a homologue to President of Venezuela Hugo Chavez anti-democratic rhetoric.
Those citizens voicing their opinion on the comments section of the newspaper strongly agreed with the military and Supreme Court’s decision to remove the President from power. A commenter named Jose wrote:
Heroic Honduras defend your democracy, don’t allow the Castro-Chavista ideology to continue to propagate throughout the continent, don’t take a step back, VIVA LA DEMOCRACIA!!!!!! Come on Honduras, Chavez will soon fall!!!!
Support for leftist and Socialist groups have surged in Latin America over the past decade. Four years ago, President Zelaya won with a very narrow margin. It’s uncertain, four years latyer if the majority of the citizens of Honduras support the President’s leftist ideals.

As a Honduran I can tell you that the majority of the population supports the measures taken. Zelaya acted like he was above the law, and commited one illegal act after another and spending millions of our money in his quest to remain in power. Now as of 11:30 pm we are getting reports that our now ex president has been flown to nicaragua and is meeting with pres. ortega of nicaragua and chaves (who by the way has already threatened to invade us).
