The Today Show Teaches Us That You Just Can’t Know Who’s Hispanic And Who Isn’t These Days
17 June 2009, 1:00 PM. By Alex Alvarez
The Today Show featured a segment all about how Latinos have impacted pop culture, specifically in the realms of media and entertainment (because Latinos in the realm of science, literature, and politics won’t likely be discovered ’til next year). And, aw, it was kind of sweet. We especially liked the presenter’s command of Spanglish and his self-professed love of cafĂ© con leche (that’s Spanish for “poison and diabetes”).

We’ll admit that we visibly cringed when they mentioned that Argentine composer Gustavo Santaolalla’s award-winning work for Brokeback Mountain was “not salsa” and, thus, surprising. But at least people are opening up to the fact that Latinos are not all one thing: We don’t all eat tacos, we don’t all listen to salsa, we aren’t all Catholic, we don’t all speak Spanish, we’re not all tan. Hell, some (very few) of us aren’t even hot.
Just one request, please, for all future discussions on Latinos: Don’t let Perez Hilton act as the representative of all Latinos on the internet. We could recommend some bloggers, if you like. Wink, nudge.

“Lay-chay”. Oh, Northerners…
Cortadito for me. Add a loaf of Cuban bread with butter …. heaven!
Latinos are in the mob.
