arguellopryorprint-770103Former Nicaraguan boxing champ and mayor of Managua Alexis Arguello, age 57, was found dead in his home early this morning with a gunshot wound to the chest. A spokesperson said an autopsy of Arguello’s body is still pending, although some reports have labeled his death a suicide following reports that he’d mishandled public funds.

Arguello, known in the boxing world as “The Explosive Thin Man,” was elected mayor of Managua last year after retiring from his athletic career.

Arguello is said to be one of, if not the, “best junior lightweight and sixth-best lightweight of the 20th century.” He was given the honor of carrying the Nicaraguan flag at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, and shortly after decided to run for mayor of the country’s capital.

In the 80s, Arguello fought against the Sandinista National Liberation Front, with which he had been formerly aligned.

Check him out at his prime:

We’ll have more information as it comes out.

“The Explosive Thin Man” sounds like a failed super hero idea.
