Chongas, Put Down Your Sharpies: Eyebrows Are So Over.

We don’t know about you, but there’s nothing quite as appealing to us as an eyebrowless mug leering out at us from the darkest corners of a nightmare. Yum, right?

According to the Daily Mail, eyebrowless models have recently become trendy (again) in fashion advertisements and editorials. They speculate that the trend stems from, as one of their interviewees called it “an optimistic, idealistic statement which is somehow unifying because it renders men and women more asexual.” And then something about the 70s and the recession and machines. 

We like the idea of taking control of one’s sexuality by making taking the focus away from it and making oneself more androgynous, or of dealing with scary times by rendering oneself visibly emotionless - those are interesting coping mechanisms and juxtapositions.

Eyebrows have played an interesting role when it comes to ideals of Latina beauty. Since we’re so often seen as expressive (or emotional or passionate or spicy or nuts), our eyebrows become one of the more prominent focal points of our faces. There is also the (untrue) stereotype that Latinas are hairy and have unibrows. One of the more famous examples that people like to point to as evidence of this being (half-German) Frida Kahlo. Although, as any loyal reader of the Las Locas series will tell you, Latinas have often aligned themselves with subcultures where, curiously, eyebrows are tweezed into oblivion, like Goths and punks and cholas.
