Nobel Laureate Arias Attempts To Solve Honduras Situation With Little Hope In Sight
18 July 2009, 7:03 PM. By Daniel Mauser
The president of Costa Rica Óscar Arias, who won the 1987 Nobel Peace Prize for brokering an end to Cold War-era conflict in Central America, has presented a proposal to solve the crisis in Honduras. Arias proposition delinates that deposed President Manuel Zelaya be reinstated until January of 2010, the time his term would officially end.
As the situation in Honduras has escalated, the Costa Rican president has become a mediator between the deposed President Manuel Zelaya and the de facto successor, Roberto Michelleti who led the coup de etat against him.
Arias, aided by Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton is attempting to reach an agreement among the team of negotiators for both opponents. Zelaya who was flown to Costa Rica the day of the coup, warned from Managua yesterday that he would wait until the end of the weekend for Arias proposal to yield some results that will reinstate him in power.
At 12 am (on Saturday) the timeline for the government that forcefully took power to accept the resolutions of the UN and the OAS to reinstitute me into power expires (…). If at that time there is no resolution from their behalf we will consider the negotiations in Costa Rica have failed.
This morning the government of Roberto Michelleti refused the proposal.
Since the coup, Honduras has been paralyzed by competing protests by Mr. Zelaya’s supporters and opponents.
