6a00d8341c89e653ef01157099c6d1970b-320wiJaime Lucas Cardinal Ortega y Alamino, the archbishop of Havana, told Cuban newspaper Juventud Rebelde that the Cuban government has arrested an unknown number of suspects in conjunction with the murders of two Spanish priests in Havana.

The first murder occurred in February of this year when 61-year-old Father Eduardo de la Fuente Serrano was found stabbed to death in a park. The more recent death happened earlier this month when 74-year-old Spanish priest Mariano Arroyo Merino was discovered dead in his parish rectory after people noticed smoke pouring out of the building and called firefighters for help.

This some Angels and Demons shit!

For those who are wondering, the Cuban government has long discouraged religious practice on the island (although - fun fact - Raul Castro attended the opening of Cuba’s first Russian church in October of last year) and, while the Catholic Church (as well as other faiths) still has a presence, it is not permitted to open schools or have its own media outlets (ie radio shows). There are currently about 150 Catholic priests from Spain and throughout Latin America working in Cuba.

We’ll keep you posted as more news comes out.

It seems the high priest - Fidel Castro - wants a priest nearby when he dies to beg for forgiveness. Err, it’s too late old chum but please stop killing these old men who have the same legitimate claim to the island that you do.
