dayana-mendoza-winnerAw, kids, we’ve come to the end of an era.

Dayana Mendoza, the Venezuelan beauty queen who nabbed the title of Miss Universe 2008, will be passing on her crown on August 23rd in the Bahamas.

To celebrate her year-long, glorious reign as Queen of the Universe, let’s look back on her journey and her myriad accomplishments.

The Pageant

Fun fact: This video syncs up perfectly to Pink Floyd’s The Wall. And my feet are talking to me.

The Boobie Photos Taken at a Hialeah Glamour Shots Circa 1992

Dayana nearly lost her title after showing some glittery side-boobage in a series of ads for the kind of jewelry they sell in hair salons. Luckily, someone remembered that, while the female form is a hideous and offensive reality we must all somehow live with, no nipples were shown. So it was all good and Dayana got to keep her crown.

Fun, Relaxing Trip to Guantanamo Bay

Dayana visited Gitmo, where she learned that prisoners are taught something… wakeboarding?… something like that. And then she had a lovely shrimp cocktail with a bartender named Hussein.

And… that’s about it! We also pretty much only just realized that this is not the same person as Dayanara Torres. Farewell!

  1. I have met Dayanara on several occasions as she helped pass out condoms and raise awareness of HIV/AIDS. She also helped me get Latinos in Washington Heights in NYC tested for HIV by standing on a sidewalk for 3 hours in the cold talking to people getting photographed and talking to women in particular about getting tested. Cold as and tired, she never complained and had a smile for everyone. I also went with her to a hospital to meet young people with HIV/AIDS and other illnesses and for about 2 hours she went room to room and took her time chatting with kids and making them and their families feel better. My hat is off to Dayanara. She was an amazing ambassador for young women and HIV prevention.
