A Mexican lesbian couple who moved to Canada before visas were imposed on Mexicans, yes, Beaners such as myself now require a visa to visit Canada, have filed for refugee status in Toronto. The couple claim that if they are sent back they will be raped and killed by the Mexican police.
Alina Gallegos Lee and Norma Angelica Gomez moved to Toronto with the dream of getting married. They moved to Canada one year after expressing thier love to one another in public and were beaten by the Mexican police. Last March they claimed asylum after the Canadian immigration attempted to deport them.
Their lawyer, George Kubes said the lovers will be sent to the Canadian Centre for Victims of Torture for an assessment. “For a long time the Mexican police have been harrassing them,” said Kubes. They were beaten up and called names. They want to live a happy life in Canada.”
“At home we were constantly persecuted for being lesbians,” Lee said.
Visas were imposed to visitors from Mexico last Monday because a large number of nationals were claiming refugee status in order to stay in the country.
Since 2005 Mexico has accounted for the number source for refugees in Canada. Last year more than 9400 people claimed refugee status and only 11 percent of the applicants who were Mexicans were allowed to stay.
