Finally: Pepsi Becomes “Pecsi” In Argentina
16 July 2009, 12:22 PM. By Alex Alvarez
In Argentina as in other Latin American countries, people tend to pronounce “Pepsi” as “Pecsi” because it is easier, phonetically. Pepsi Cola decided to run with this little quirk and have launched a new campaign announcing that “Pepsi” products designed for sale in the Argentine market will now appear as “Pecsi.” A bold and refreshing move, to be sure.

What other products might benefit from a little bit of Spanish-friendly tweaking? Hmm…
Esnickers chocolate bars.
Eminemes bite-size candies.
Col-ga-te toothpaste.
Eeron Berr drink.
El Rono Macdono Ese fast food chain.
Any others?

a couple of years ago when I was in Mexico, we had just arrived so I was still in english speaking mode. At a restaurant, ordering my drink I askd for a Squirt. The waiter said ‘Que’ …I thought for a minute then said Esquer. Then he knew exactly what I wanted.

The interesting thing about what they’re doing in Argentina with these commercials is that they’re acknowledging that the pronunciation is broken down by class. There are other versions of the commercials where they state that more explicitly.
The higher the class and education, the more likely they will say “Pepsi”, whereas the working class will say “Pecsi”.
I saw a torta shop in DF once called Tortas “Pollo Sport.”
