Shakira’s “She Wolf” Cover Revealed, Makes Us Miss Old Shakira

shewolf545The cover art for Shakira’s new single “She Wolf” was unveiled today and, boy, is it ever sexy to see a woman clad in less-than-functional beachwear locked in a cage! We think Britney looks particularly pretty here.

We have no idea what prompted Shakira to blend in with the Jessicas in the music industry instead of creating something new and different. Nor, for that matter, do we understand the motivation behind her and Beyonce morphing into the same person: The shoes? The leotard? The often problematic whitewashing with yards of straight, blonde hair? All extremely Sasha Fierce.

Shakira’s transformation is especially troubling given that, unlike other crossover artists (or those who tried, unsuccessfully, to break into the mainstream U.S. market… Paulina…), her look has altered drastically from when she sought to appeal primarily to a Spanish-speaking, Latin American audience:

Shakira was, and continues to be, beautiful. Her music… not so much. And her image? We’ll admit to finding it extremely boring, predictable and, frankly, disappointing.

What do you think of Shakira’s single cover, though? Does it make you… howl? Chortle, sigh, crumble.

I am a big fan of Shakira but can honestly say that I hate the latest single, “La Loba”.. all the heavy breathing and highly computerized vocals make me miss the raw talent of her earlier days.

I agree, I am really disappointed with Shakira’s new look. I honestly did not recognize her at first. It looks like an entirely new person, not the woman that I admired. Why did she feel the need to blend in with America celebrities? I can’t tell her apart from Faith Hill (not that she’s not hot) and a white Beyonce

I totally agree … the cover art is a total ripoff of what Beyonce has been doing since Single Ladies — I can just imagine what the videos are going to be like … it’s sad when commercialization erodes raw talent and originality :(

she totally looks like Britney, kind of creepy!

  4. I don’t know who that girl in that cage is up there, but I’ll bet fifty bucks she doesn’t know the words to “Ojos Asi”.

She sounds like a sheep. She’s a beautifull woman that lacks talent. Her style is unique, no one else sings like her. The latter and her beauty, are probably the only things that helped her gain fame.

Before, when she put her talent on center display rather than sexualizing herself, she was hot as hell. Yes, she was always good looking, but her sexuality was underneath it all, serving as a fuel of expression because she actually had something important to say. Now, it’s her entire message or it distracts from what it is she wants to say.

Now, she’s just another fool (e.g., Beyonce). She’s the worst possible thing: a wasted talent. And for what?

It’s a great cover. She looks a bit like Madonna in Hung up. I don’t think she’s selling out, I think she’s changing and adapting. If you don’t change in the entertainment business, you get stuck and fail, so good for her. I think she’s a very talented and smart one with a unique style of singing.

when she sings, she sounds like how deaf people talk.

  11. do we have to have a memorial service for the old shakira? mtv unplugged anyone? i remember looking up to her and thinking she was so great, wrote her own kick ass songs, her mountains of red and black hair. god, she was amazing.

this new package is just, eh, boring, predictable, all what (most) of you guys said above.

now i’m gonna go watch ciega, sordomuda on youtube. and try not to cry at missing the old shakira.

LOVED her back in teh day and I hae to admit I just don’t get this. Why is she trying to be Beyonce/Lady Gaga, with the forsaking of pants and all?

well, on the contrary, even though I don’t think She Wolf is outstanding, I completely disagree with your article’s ignorant comment about “We have no idea what prompted Shakira to blend in with the Jessicas in the music industry instead of creating something new and different. Nor, for that matter, do we understand the motivation behind her and Beyonce morphing into the same person: The shoes? The leotard? You have apparently failed to notice that Shakira’s choice to wear a leotard or any article of clothing does not label her as a copy of any other entertainer. Even if you really think Shakira has copied Beyonce, why don’t you spend a few minutes checking out this link on youtube? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XkMVTwFK_i8

Your ‘ingenious’ comment about the ’straight hair’ is disputable - do you not realise that many singers are blonde? So, in what way does that emulate Sasha Fierce? So does Beyonce “own” straight hair, leotards, shoes? Right…Frankly, using the same logic, why don’t you mix-and-match say, Shakira and Lady GaGa, Lily Allen, or anyone with straight hair. Well I’ll tell you why, because you’re trying to bag out Shakira, obviously, and by comparing her to one of the biggest singers lately, it obviously “works”. Well for one, Beyonce is a brunette, that might be a start for you.
Despite this it is pleasing to see that you have chosen Inevitable to prove your point. However, once again, you neglect to realise that Shakira’s so-called “change to blonde for crossover” was not done for that purpose. In fact, she was already a blonde at the end of 1999, before she was even dreaming about releasing an English-speaking album. As she has claimed herself, it’s a woman’s choice, or a woman’s thing. she even became a redhead, months after that Inevitable video was made. And her look has not drastically changed. If you call a simple change from brunette to blonde a “drastic” change, you must be on crack.

Her music, not beautiful? OK Even I can admit that I’m not that big a fan of Hips Don’t Lie, nor La Tortura, nor Loba/She Wolf at this stage, but have you even had the time or will to listen to the entire album of Fijacion Oral 1/Oral Fixation 2? The sexy songs probably only compromise 10% of the momento, so…

To the two comments above me, I don’t think the editors of Guanabee dislike Shakira. I think the real problem is we have become so accustomed to Latino media outlets doing reverential pieces on her that it’s a little jarring to see someone take a more analytical approach.

To the person who said, “she was already a blonde at the end of 1999, before she was even dreaming about releasing an English-speaking album” she ALWAYS had the desire to do an English album. She even told Eres magazine back in ’96 that she wanted to have “gringitos” listening to her music. When she partnered with Emilio Estefan was already planning on doing a crossover. Her English-language debut was supposed to be an English version of Ladrones (that’s where Eyes Like Yours comes from) but she later decided to do an album of mostly new material.
What I’ve never understood though is why some many people focus on the dyed blond hair and not on the fact that she lost a visible amount of weight when she did the crossover. According to an interview a Colombian model friend of hers did for TV Azteca she had liposuction on her stomach. This would explain a lot.

even if that is the case, it is incorrect to attribute the change in hair colour to her crossover.

that liposuction thing is the crudest thing i have ever heard. according to “a friend”. any sources?
even if it was right, whats wrong with beautifying ur body?
people talk about shakira dying her hair, and in your case, liposuction, as a commercial move, as if it turns over tables, but in reality its most probably a woman’s thing

It was on a special TV Azteca did on her. The model was named either Ximena or Jimena (sorry I don’t remember) but she did say on camera that Shaki had lipo in her stomach. (According to her ex-manager she had tremendous pressure to lose weight.) I didn’t say it was that or the dyed blonde hair was directly related to the crossover but the timing is certainly reason for a pause. Re: “whats wrong with beautifying ur body?” Lupita D’Alessio (who I like) has openly had liposuction in her stomach and she is aging strangely because lipo makes you fat in weird places. And why is that crude?

I’ve never understood why people like her music. Her voice sounds like a female Fozzy Bear singing to Kermit the Frog. She is remerkably fine. But her voice has no appeal. I’t snot my thing, I just don’t get it.

She hasn’t changed. Half of her package is the hypersexualized image which is a marketing choice and a fun one at that. Let’s face it people, Shakira is never going to deliver Agaetis Byrjuns. She’s going to crank fun pop songs voicing her thoughts with that lovely vibrating and fairly unique voice of hers which is why she’s worth listening to. Why not just wind down the pointless deconstruction?

  21. Shakira is a great talent and you should all be happy for her success she has had in the anglo market. Many others have tried and failed like ahhh Paulina Rubio….She looks hot in her new video, an artist needs to keep evolving to keep her audience interested, obviously she has succeeded with this song and video if all of us are commenting…bythewayLA vote for ‘She wolf’ for video of the month on terra.com …..Cheers!

I have to say that every one that has a bad thing to say about shakira should get a life. Because each and every one of you women wish you could do what she has done and perform as she has done. And if any men have something to say well you just wish she was yours. So save your comments for yourself because until anyone of you can do what she has done in life then and only then can you comment in the way you do. Shakira you go and dont stop until you finsh what you set out to do and that is to make peolpe happy and greatful to have you.

    • i think the point is we (at least i) loved shakira back in the day. when she was performing in a different manner than she is now. we hate cause we love and want her to be good at being herself, not an image of some generic blonde pop singer. cause she’s better than that. at least i hope so.

  23. 8th Wonder of the world!
We’re very pleased to report that Loba (the Spanish version of She Wolf) has hit Number One in the Billboard Latin Songs chart. This is actually Shakira’s eighth Latin Number One in the US. Amazing.

In the 90’s Shakira was rock ( via Alanis Morissette), then she connects with her Lebanese roots, then dance dance hall, now wanabee Madonna/electro/disco. What is going on Shakira? Did she sell out?
