Spanish-Language Tabloids, Always So Sensitive: Lost Your Hair To Chemo? What A Shame!

lorena-rojas-tvnotas-julio-2009We know American, English-language tabloids aren’t exactly the epitome of class and sensitivity, but, you know, at least they make some sort of attempt at feigning concern for ailing stars. We really appreciate that thin veneer of false sympathy. Spanish-language tabloids, however, besides being about 86% more naked than their gringo counterparts, rarely even pretend to give a shit. Maybe that’s kind of admirable?

Take TVnotas most recent cover, for example, in which they run a photo of Mexican actress and singer Lorena Rojas wearing a cap to hide baldness. Lorena, you see, is currently undergoing chemotherapy. The image is juxtaposed with a photo of Lorena with her long curls intact, accompanied by the headline, “What a shame!” (or, perhaps more accurately, “How embarrassing!”) “Lorena Rojas Lost Her Hair From So Much Chemotherapy!”

We understand that the world of celebrity gossip is practically by definition one that is lacking in civility, but, really, there’s about a thousand other ways they could have reported on this woman’s illness, which, let’s face it, can be a pretty crass topic to undertake in the first place, without emphasizing her looks or introducing the element of shame or embarrassment.

Thanks for putting the ass in class, TVnotas.

Have you noticed this difference between English and Spanish-language tabloids?

  2. “Tantas quimioterapias” almost makes it sound like she was overdoing it on purpose.Or is this just an idiomatic expression that I never heard before?
As for the english language tabloits: the little concern they show is so fake that it’s almost more offensive.

  3. Pobre, victima de estos imbeciles, Diosito la bendiga y la ayude a salir adelante :)
