Belinda: Who Or What Is She? And Why Should We Care?

We’ve been writing about Belinda quite a bit lately, now that she’s making out in limos and using young men for publicity and whatnot. But we realize that some of you might not be entirely familiar with who she is. So let’s remedy that. Here’s our primer on all things Belinda. Enjoy. We’re sure you’ll be seeing a lot more of Belinda very soon.
- Child Star
Belinda, who was born in Spain to a Spanish father and French mother before moving to Mexico at the age of four, got her start as a child actress in various kid-friendly TV series. She starred in her first show, ¡Amigos X Siempre! at age 10, which was soon followed by roles in Aventuras En El Tiempo, Cómplices Al Rescate and Corazones al límite.
Any of one of these shows will provide more than 100 times one’s daily allowance of pigtails, freckles, and marvelous adventures in worlds comprised almost entirely of primary colors.
- Singing Career
Belinda has released a string of successful pop-rock songs. She was nominated for two Latin Grammy Awards in 2007, both related to her album Utopía. She is also partially responsible for this remix:
- Personal Life
Last summer, Belinda’s home in Mexico was broken into, and rumors circulated that the thieves responsible had confiscated a sex tape. Other conspiracy theories held that her parents had orchestrated the robbery in order to scare her into moving with them to Spain. At the time, Belinda countered the rumors by letting us know that, not only would her parents never do that, but that a sex tape could not possibly exist because her hymen had yet to be torn asunder.
About five months later, a video of her stripping for then-boyfriend Ryan Pichard made its way around the intertubes.
Belinda disappeared for some time after that, re-emerging with a new, tiny nose and a new, tiny boyfriend named Giovani Dos Santos (He’s a soccer player! It’s just like Posh and Becks!) as well as a brand new series to promote: Camaleones. Better known to us as “That Show Where Pee Wee Gets Punched!”
And we’re quite sure Belinda’s star - and publicity stunts - can both only be on the rise.

Here’s the only time I have ever encountered Belinda in any capacity: I was reading a Spanish magazine I found in the subway–TV y Novelas or something, and there was some sort of picture of belinda and the name of some song/album she had called “Ni Freud Ni Tu Papa” or something like that. I had no idea who she was, but a woman who was sitting next to me took the magazine and asked “Who is that? She looks white. Why is she in the Spanish magazine? Spanish people don’t look like that! Why do you people hate yourselves? Why are you looking at her? You want to look like her, Mami? Why does it say Freud there? Spanish people don’t know who Freud is!” That was so incredibly racist and off the mark, but everytime I hear about Belinda (which, incidentally, is only when reading Guanabee) I remember that episode. It was like every single racist Hispanic trope in a nutshell. I was super impressed that subway lady pronounced “Freud” correctly though, I don’t know if that was a good sign or not.
Quite the anthropologist you found yourself next to on the subway! I guess when people lack brains, they grow an extra set of balls.
i gotta admit…i did like “ni freud ni tu mama” b/c of the raven aka that’s so raven cameo and use of spanglish….and the song “angel” but those are the only two songs i swear….really
