Fired Miami Anchor Charles Perez Keeps Fighting The Good Fight Against Gay Nazis, Lesbians
14 August 2009, 3:45 PM. By Alex Alvarez
Oh Charles Perez. We were shocked and appalled when you first demoted, then fired from your position as a TV news anchor in Miami because, allegedly, you were having some “gender identity issues.” You were so tan, and perfectly coiffed, with such nice teeth! We grew up with you, and would miss you. But then you compared yourself to Martin Luther King and we sort of laughed awkwardly and muttered, “Haha… what are you doing, man?”
And now you’re saying that your former News Director, Gay-American Bill Pohovey, is less of a gay person because he fired you? The only way this could be more awkward would be if you, haha, we don’t know, brought up the Holocaust:
I think he’s a company man. I think if you had to label Bill a gay man or a company man, you would pick company man. I also talked to my agent about it. My agent said to me, “You know, Charles, you got to remember, there were Jews in the 1930s who sold out other Jews so they would stay good with the guys in power.”
For the record, Perez’s agent, Richard Liebner, says he does not recall having said that. But Perez remains adamant:
He’s a Jewish man, and he was very firm about that.
But why would this firm Jew deny having compared a man who fired a fellow gay to someone who marked his neighbor for death in one of history’s most famous instances of genocide?
He’s a fucking politician at the end of the day.
So surely Perez, then, would work hard to promote a united image of gay people in the media, right? No, because, you guys, lesbians have it so easy now and Anderson Cooper won’t come out and it’s Oprah’s fault and why is everyone such a fucking Nazi:
I thought, If you had a straight newsman with that profile of that same age, who is reasonably handsome, who is unmarried, would Oprah not have even asked the question if he was seeing somebody? And I can only imagine that it was negotiated ahead of time, or it was understood between them. And that’s the difference. It’s a subtlety that really needs to end. It’s great that Anderson is on the air and he is as successful as he is. But there is a difference now between gay men and gay women. It’s twofold. Gay women have had the benefit of giants like Ellen and Rosie. They may not have been in news, but they have certainly blazed the trail. In the television industry, it is still acceptable to have gay men in a stereotype that straight men feel comfortable with, whether it is Steven Cojocaru or Jack onWill & Grace. But the Will of Will & Grace.
That’s true… to a point.
But if we have to give a couple of examples from the entertainment industry to support an argument, then we can go ahead and name two out, proud gay men in the media - like, say, Neil Patrick Harris and David Hyde Pierce - to support the generalization that, yes. It is so easy to be gay in Hollywood or on Broadway. Or when we can think of two allegedly closeted lesbians like Jodie Foster and Queen Latifah and then say that, oh, it is actually so hard being a lesbian in Hollyweird. Basically, Charles, you can come up with an example to support almost any argument. Especially if your central argument is “My situation sucks for me.”
And, come on, this struggle isn’t about how much easier or harder this or that person has it, is it? This is about you. And, let’s face it, the more interviews you grant and ridiculous quotes and sound bites you give, the more it’s evident that you, sir, are no MLK or Harvey Milk. Or, hell, even a Lance Bass. In fact, the celebrity you’re reminding most of lately is…
Well.
