El Loco Elizalde And Agent Killed In Guadalajara
18 August 2009, 10:19 AM. By Alex Alvarez
Carlos Ocaranza, the Mexican performer better known as El Loco Elizalde, was killed along with his agent, Jorge Altamirano Pelayo, as they were leaving a venue in Guadalajara. The singer had just finished a performance at a bar called “La Revancha” in Atizapán de Zaragoza. Two gunmen were awaiting his exit and shot him in the head and chest as he made his way to a waiting car. His attackers are reported to have fled on motorcycle, leaving their victims to die on the pavement amid 12 bullet casings.
A relative of Ocaranza’s, fellow performer Valentin “El Gallo de Oro” Elizalde, was gunned down in Reynosa back in 2006. His manager and driver were also killed as the three were surrounded by men carrying semi-automatic weapons.
Last year, Ocaranza was shot at but not injured after receiving various threats, including one note simply reading “you’re next.”
These are certainly not isolated cases, as many artists who perform “narcocorridos,” ballads about drug dealers and the drug trade, have been slain in recent years. Investigators looking into the case absolutely believe that Ocaranza was targeted for his music:
