Singer Gloria Estefan was asked to weigh in on the current controversy surrounding Juanes' decision to organize a "Concert for Peace" in Cuba. Without resorting to threats or ultimatums or orders, Gloria, who has been very outspoken about her issues with Cuba's government, highlighted why, in her opinion, it would be a poor decision for these foreign island to perform there.
Much has been made by supporters of the concert about "allowing Cubans the freedom" to enjoy music and cultural events as anyone else might. But, as Gloria points out, that will likely not be the reality. She tells of how she's has heard from people currently on the island that the communist government is busing in certain, carefully selected individuals to attend the concert rather than allow equal access for all Cubans:
The Estefans are extremely influential in Miami, where Juanes has a home, especially among the Cuban exile community, so her decision to opine on the matter amounts to more than the usual celebrity soundbite. We hope you caught her aside, "Emilio has spoken to him about this." We wonder what Emilio Estefan might have told Juanes and if a chancleta was involved at any point during that discussion...
It's something Charytin, for one, would rather not think about. Watch how agitated she becomes as her fellow co-hosts continue to discuss the concert:
With so much fidgeting, and in that jacket, Charytin sort of looks like a band leader with a dark secret. We hope it involves s trombone. That is rusty.

Having seen my GF yank her slipper off to beat her nephew's ass, your chancleta comment cracked me the hell up.
Replyooooh...what if Juanes gets boycotted by Univision if he goes through with it...those Estefans get their way
ReplyThe thing is, while it seems plausible that the Cuban gubmint would so something udnerhanded like that, I don't think "Gloria Estefan heard from some people" is enough proof to just go, "well ok then, cancel everything!" Gloria definitely has a dog in this fight. I do think that as the organizer of the event, it's Juanes's responsibility to do what he can so that something like that doesn't happen. Unfortunately, even if it doesn't happen, Gloria will have heard from someone that it did, and that can be proof enough for some.
ReplyGreat! Now the leaders of the Miami Music Mafia are involved! You crazy Cubans! LEAVE JUANES ALONE! He is a human being, an artist with feelings and all he goes is give, give and give!! And you just take, take, take!! LEAVE HIM ALONE!!
ReplyBased on reports of congressional black leaders backing up a revitalized Fidel Castro; be sure that Obama is looking for ways to get back into Cuba soon. The Estabans will need a lot of juice to stop the rush of black enthusiasm for Castro since they have no idea about the communistic, repressive leaders history nor do they care one fig. Would love to see why this all came about and so would the Estabans, I'll wager.
Replygloria estefan gave concerts in various countries with communist governments,in europe and latin america,i do not like juanes and his friends to go to cuba, but he is colombian and his friends are spanish and puerto rican,so they can do whatever they please, what i dislike is the cuban communists, taking advantage of the situation by not letting cuban-american music groups go and play for their fans.it's a one sided venture.
Replyanother ignorant is sending a message,of course he can do what he wants,he does not have to ask permission to play for the cuban communists he can go anytime he wants, just like rivera, montanez, billy joel and oscar de leon and many more that visit the communist island anytime they want, but don't blame the crazy cubans because they are not and,and they have the right to protest if they want too.take, take, take, you are full of envid.
ReplyBla bla bla bla bla! Boo hoo! Poor Cubans, their getting a concert with the biggest star in Latin America ... Boo hoo hoo! It's so terrible! ... Communist, Cuba, Concert ... What are we all to do?!
