john_hughesThis is the final death knell heralding the end of our youth. First they came for the 70’s and Farrah and Uncle Walter and then they came for the 80’s and MJ. But John Hughes? John Hughes writer and director of the entire filmtrack of our adolescence? This cannot be!

From Variety:

John Hughes, director of culturally significant films such as “The Breakfast Club,” “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” and “Planes, Trains and Automobiles,” died suddenly today of a heart attack while taking a morning walk during a trip to Manhattan. He was 59.

John Wilden Hughes, Jr., born on Feb. 18, 1950 in Michigan, began as an advertising copywriter in Chicago.

In the last decade, he stepped back from the legacy he created to enjoy time with his family, maintain a functioning farm in northern Illinois and support independent arts. He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Nancy, two sons, John and James, and four grandchildren.

Close the shutters, cover the mirrors. We’re going to watch Sixteen Candles and cry.

In memoriam, here’s the scene from National Lampoon’s Vacation, (which John wrote), where Aunt Edna passes. Somehow we think John would appreciate a similar service. He always did have a great sense of humor.

“Close the shutters, cover the mirrors”. LOL!!!!! I remember my mother doing that when I was a little girl.

Pretty in Pink, Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off - it does’ matter how many times I have watched these films, if there are on TV, you better believe it , I’m watching them again. R.I.P. John Hughes.
