Mariah Carey, “I Want To Know What Love Is”: Have We Run Out Of Ideas?
28 August 2009, 3:52 PM. By Cindy Casares
Mariah Carey just remade “I Want To Know What Love Is,” for her 12th studio album, Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel, due out on September 15th. We swooned to the Foreigner ballad in our tween years when we used to believe in things like love. Now we know love is only a marketing ploy used to sell millions of dollars in merchandising to eleven year-old girls because they, (and 22 year-old gay men), make the world go round. And those groups will be swaying in the aisles to this new rendition. Mariah doesn’t do a bad job on it. But, have we completely run out of ideas in the mainstream music industry? This song was b-grade in 1984, but in this pre-fab, American Idol era of pop music, it now passes for a classic. And not in the ironic sense. The audience who consumes Mariah is without that gene.

Ghastly. She could hardly do worse. Well - Gordon Lightfoot perhaps. But still
Heartache and Pain…..she got that right; it’s all wrong!!
To say that the bulk of Mariah’s fan base is “22 year old gay men”. Then to say that her fan base, is without the the irony gene, is contradictory, offensive, and just plain wrong. Irony is one of the modern gay man’s tool for survival. We get the joke before you even think of it. Your prom date from 1984 agrees with me.
i would agree with you except for when it comes to music.
