Mexico Decriminalizes Small Doses Of Drugs

Exciting news for people who carry small amounts of cocaine in empty tubes of lipstick! Today, Mexico has decided to decriminalize the possession of small amounts of marijuana, cocaine, heroin, LSD and methamphetamine. At first, this seems counterproductive in the midst of all the drug violence Mexico finds itself contending with, but some say decriminalizing drugs in small amounts will help combat corruption among police officers who routinely shake down casual users in order to extort them, threaten them with long jail sentences, ask for bribes or force them to watch Gigli. 

Supporters of this new measure point out that people in possession of very small amounts of drugs rarely faced charges anyway and that there was also legal leeway for those caught with what is referred to as “personal use” amounts.  Of the 95,000 people detained because of small-scale drug dealing or possession, only 12 to 15 % ever faced charges. They also say the decriminalization will help separate casual drug users from addicts or dealers. Which doesn’t make sense to us, seeing how heavy drug users don’t usually carry their entire stash or paraphernalia on their person at all times. Then again, we’re not Mexican politicians. 

Under the new law, “personal use” of the drugs in question amount to 5 grams of weed, half a gram of cocaine, 50 milligrams of heroin, 40 milligrams of methamphetamine and 0.015 milligrams of LSD.

Those against the law wonder how the decriminalization of these drugs will affect the morale and motivation of the Mexican army, which has been dealt with the task of combating drug use in Mexico. Although maybe this will now inspire them to focus even more of their efforts on finding people like El Pozolero instead of El High School Pothead.
