Oscar Casares Talks To Us About Amigoland
10 August 2009, 12:01 PM. By Cindy Casares

One of the great things about managing a website on Latino culture is that when your uncle writes a book, you can shamelessly promote it there. Such is the case with Amigoland, the book my uncle, Oscar Casares, wrote which comes out today. My promoting him is not purely biased, though. Other people who get paid to to do such things have recommended him highly. So, honestly, I’d cover him even if he weren’t my uncle because, for me, his writing is one of the few examples of portraying Latinos in print that doesn’t feel forced. His voice is something like Rodolfo Anaya meets James Joyce. (So far, both his books are set in our hometown of Brownsville, Texas.)
I had the opportunity to sit down with Oscar at his home in Austin and follow him during the first two stops of his book tour, which kicked off in Brownsville last week. There, I witnessed his unorthodox tour plan which includes stops at the local grocery chain, H-E-B. I was also reminded that, when you’re related to a writer, sooner or later all of your family shit ends up in print.

Just heard of Oscar Casares from a Facebook friend so googled it and found your site. Love the video interview! Plus, love the spelling of “wannabe” and “any guy” : )
He’s so smart and handsome. Yum!!!!!
putting the books in H-E-B is a brilliant idea. my mama texican first introduced me to your uncle. i have his book on my shelf here in califas to remind me of home :)
My gaydar is picking up a very STRONG signal. Hmmm.
I have been at close range and while I can assure you the Gaydar may go off it is malfunctioning. Oscar is just one of those terribly frustrating, sexy, intellectual, accomplished, well dressed hetero men who has been this put together for years, before that the stupid term metrosexual even became a part of our vernacular.
Single? Family? Feel free to pass my deets along, grrrl!
Married and father of two.
Nice video. Going to hear him speak tonight in Dallas. Thanks, D
