Philip Garrido is a man of many hats: Father, husband, registered sex offender, blogger. In 1991, Garrido and his wife, Nancy, snatched a then-eleven-year-old Jaycee Lee Dugard off the street as her stepfather looked on. Eighteen years later, Jaycee, who had been repeatedly raped by Garrido in a compound he kept in his backyard and made to bear two of his children, told officials of her identity during a parole hearing of Garrido's to which she'd been brought along. Garrido had introduced Jaycee, now in her late 20s, as his wife, "Allissa."
Her stepfather, Carl Probyn, who was the last to see Jaycee as she was kidnapped and has long been a suspect in her disappearance, spoke to CBS' Maggie Rodriguez about the case, Jaycee's reunion with her mother and the fact that she may have suffered from Stockholm Syndrome in the years she was with Garrido:

Jaycee's case is, sadly, not an isolated one. There was the recent case of Austrian man Josef Fritzl, who imprisoned his daughter in a dank basement, raping and impregnating her repeatedly over the course of 24 years. Fritzl's wife cared for a couple of the resulting children, but maintains ignorance over her daughter's imprisonment. There is also the case of Elizabeth Smart, the young girl who was abducted by a couple in 2001.
Before either of these, there was the case of Colleen Stan. Her story and trail set the precedent for understanding what abduction and imprisonment does to the victim and paved the way for understanding and discussing Stockholm Syndrome. Stan was kidnapped in 1977 at the age of 20 while hitchhiking and kept as a sex slave by her captor, Cameron Hooker, for a period of seven years. Cameron's wife Nancy helped to kidnap Stan and knew of her torment and rape, eventually telling police about the girl in exchange for immunity.
While many may wonder what goes on through the minds of these men - and their female accomplices (who are, at times, also their victims) - Garrido lends us some insight via his blog, "Voices Revealed." In it, he speaks of religious salvation and frequently discusses hearing voices. For example:

THE U.S. FEDERAL GOVERNMENT IS NOT THE SOURCE OF MIND CONTROL U.C.L.A. conducted a three year study from (2003 to 2006) their conclusion at the end of the 3 year study was that the number of cases where people heard voices increased by fifty percent. The following reports will provide needed insight. This type of activity is increasing worldwide. Voices have come about due to the powerful design of the human mind and is intended for a purpose beyond our present understanding. Be assured it is to provide and protect our future development. WARNING These areas are off limits and a danger to anyone believing they can experience this type of freedom. It belongs to God for the direct application of His Word.Garrido, who seems to take meticulous care in acquiring witnesses and signatures, making him one of the most red tape-laden internet prophets of which we know, a sort of mouthpiece for God. One of his blog posts also contains a disclaimer we are tempted to tack onto the end of all our posts:
CONTROVERSY IS NOT WELCOME FOR I CHALLENGE NO ONES PERSONAL BELIEFS CONCERNING GOD. THIS IS TO PROVIDE A WAKE UP CALL THAT WILL BEGIN SAVING LIVES AND OPEN THE NEXT CHAPTER OF DEVELOPING HIS PURPOSE. THE OPPORTUNITY TO EXAMINE HAS COME IN PEACE THROUGH SOUND REASONING TO MATURELY ADDRESS HIS WISDOM IN AN ORDERLY AND KNOWLEDGEABLE MANNER.Just kidding. Controversy brings in pageviews. Garrido, as we mentioned, is a registered sex offender and this is, unsurpisingly, not the first time he has kidnapped a young female. In 1976, when Garrido was 25, he tapped on a young woman's car window, asking her for a ride. When she lowered her window, he pulled her out of the car, taped her up, and drove her to a storage unit. Police saw the car and became alarmed when they heard the woman scream from the storage unit. Upon entering the unit, officers discovered that it had been furnished with rugs, a projector, several pornographic materials, sex toys, alcohol and a spotlight. The following year, Garrido was sentenced to 50 years in federal prison for kidnapping and five years to life for sexual assault. He was paroled in Nevada in 1988 and then paroled in California. Which was a spectacular course of action given being in the prison system obviously healed Garrido of all his twisted impulses. At least Garrido will be guaranteed to leave an indelible mark on The Media, a mysterious and nebulous organization with which he is much concerned. After all, what better way for all of us to get our our "heart-warming" stories of rape and abuse than via blogs? The following is from an interview Garrido had with KCRA television:
Yes, I am doing fine. In the end, this is going to be a powerful heart-warming story, one in which you’re going to be really impressed, it’s going to take world news. The first thing I would like to tell you and the only thing I would like to tell you right now of… Just because for some reason I didn’t get to speak with you today and I asked to speak with you is this: Contact, go to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, fifteenth floor, in San Francisco and ask for a copy of the documents that I left with them three days ago. This is for you, the mass media, that is left in your hands. There is something powerful in them. Once you get these documents, they have a [???] in them, they an investigation in them, and they have powerful witnesses concerning my situation. I would like to stop right there so then we can sit across from each other and then you’ll have that in your hands. Because what you’re going to have in your hands will take world news immediately. And he was absolutely right.
