emmys_kim_kardashianMaybe it’s because of the recession, or because everyone seems to be working with a professional stylist instead of choosing their own clothing, but you don’t see too many high-profile actresses dressed in breathtakingly over-the-top fashions nowadays. Gone are the days of Cher’s outlandish - and brilliant - Bob Mackie creations, or Demi Moore’s infamous mutant ballgown-and-bicycle-shorts outfit. Now, awards show sartorial selections are mostly safe, tasteful, calculated - and maybe a little bit boring for the audience watching at home.

That’s not to say there weren’t some noteworthy dresses worn at this weekend’s Emmy Awards. Let’s take a look at some of our favorite and least favorites, shall we?

Favorite: January Jones in Versace Atelier

This is our favorite dress of the entire evening. It manages to be both architectural and ethereal, and breathtaking without distracting from January Jones’ face and body. We suppose it also helps that Betty Draper over here is maddeningly (Oh! See what we did there? …Sorry.) attractive. We’re glad she kept her air up and her accessories simple to draw even more attention to that dress’ amazing bodice.

Honorable Mention: Chloe Sevigny in Isaac Mizrahi

Chloe Sevigny has the unique ability to really inject personality into her clothes. The casual hair, the gold brooch, the makeup - everything about her styling not only really compliments the dress, but keeps her from looking like a very stylish mannequin. Plus: Polka dots!

Least Fave: Padma Lakshmi in Badgley Mishka

We’ve never been a fan of Badgley Mishka (which is probably for the best given we’ll never be able to afford their designs) and even less so of combining purple and red. The dusky purple dulls Padma’s skin and that terrible series of tumors sprouting from her hip competes with the tentacles coiling around her shoulders. All in all: Awful. And more awful still given it’s more “blegh” than “HEINOUS.” When will people be brave enough to be “HEINOUS?”
