"Soy un hombre sincero..."

It would seem that Puerto Rican singer Olga Tañon has decided to make herself the official mouthpiece of the “concert for peace” organized by Juanes. Not only have an overwhelming number of reports on the concert featured quotes and observations by Tañon while Juanes himself has remained relatively mum, but she was also the one to announce that she and the Colombian singer have been invited to the White House by President Barack Obama.

She also told the Cuban exile community to chill out because, hey you guys, it’s not like Cuba is the only country with problems!

It’s obvious that the Cuban exile community feels a great deal of pain, but Cuba is not the only country in the world that has suffered. In the whole world, 28 thousand people die of hunger and no one says anything.

And yet… No. Hunger is not really the prevalent problem facing Cuba, nor does it have anything to do with criticism over the concert. This is like saying its silly of Iraqis to want American troops out because there’s widespread rape going on in Darfur; it’s like comparing apples and … well. Rape. Not the same thing, Olga. And if world hunger is such an important issue to you, why not do a “Concert to End, Like, Hunger & Whatever” in a nation marked by lack of access to food instead of a “concert for peace” in Cuba? AY OLGA.

Speaking of hunger and crushing poverty, though, Olga, in her very next sentence, says Cubans asked her to bring several treats on her trip that are unavailable on the island. Treats like vitamins:

When I asked what they wanted me to bring, they told me to take gum with me. They said that there they don’t have gum, vitamins, aspirin, rulers, pencils, sweets, candies, chocolates… And then you say, “Wow, we’re to give a little bit.”

But who cares if they don’t have aspirin? There was a suicide bombing in Pakistan!

In any case, according to Olga, she and Juanes will make their way to visit the White House sometime next week. This comes after Obama diplomatically expressed his thoughts on the concert, saying:

Let me be clear. The U.S. government isn’t a concert promoter. I certainly don’t think it hurts U.S.-Cuban relations… (but) I wouldn’t overstate the degree that it helps.

Oh, Obama. Why do you hate peace?

So. What do you think Olga, Juanes and President Obama will discuss when they meet?

  2. Obama should bring the Castros and Diaz-Balarts together for a beer summit, only perhaps better a Rum Summit or Mojito Summit. Let’s have drink and hash it out, be-aches. It’s been to friggin’ long.

Mr. Alvarez I found your article hysterical. I am a Cuban born 44 year old woman who has been in this country since she was 8 years of age. I think the concert was a wonderful thing and think that, in Juane’s own words, It is Time to Change. After having said that, I think that Olga, who I happen to admire and love her music, should not think that she now has a PhD in Cuban history because she spent a whole what? 48 hours in Cuba. Careful Olga, you do not want to mess up the good deed which you participated in by letting your mouth run wild. Everyone has the right to feel what they feel, and we should all be respectful of one another. That also goes for the minority of the Cuban Exiles who feel that they have to destroy CD’s and make fools out of themselves in Calle 8. If we want “Liberty” for our country, we need to let everyone live in liberty and that includes respecting where others go to work which in this case is sing.

    • I’m very glad the post gave you a chuckle, compay, and obviously agree with your sentiments re: Olga, but I am actually a Miss Alvarez.
