Mexican wrestler Cibernetico's Awesome Death Wedding of Darkness and Doom to his love, Griselda the Gristly, contained pretty much everything we would have wanted in a wedding when we were but an alienated lass of 15: Snake rings! A Santa Muerte statue! Bad tattoos! Dreads! Lots of black! ...Aztec priests?
His wedding made us wonder about other goth Latinos who might be lurking outside a Hot Topic in darkest suburbia, scowling whilst deep-throating food court churros. Who are these people? Where do they hang out? And can we listen to Skinny Puppy together while playing Ouija?

A quick Google search on "goth latinos" turned up EthnicGoth.com - a site devoted to "African American Goths, Latino Goths, Hispanic Goths, Native American Goths, East Indian, and Middle Eastern Goths. It is not the goal of this site to discriminate. Therefore, minorities that don't fit the strict definition of goth or gothic can also be found here. Those who are minority or ethnic Pagans, Wiccans, Vamps, Vampyrs, Vampires, or involved with the occult may also be featured on this site due to similarities in fashion." Vamps, vampyrs and vampires? Sign us up! The site features a handy FAQ to help those who conflate non-Anglo with "having an ethnicity" to get to know their minority goth brethren. Our favorite question?
Are Latina Goths better in bed? I am posting this because I have been asked this question entirely too many times since this website opened. Being African American, Latino, Hispanic, Native American, Asian, Middle Eastern, or East Indian does not mean a person is any better or any worse in bed. The stereotypes of ethnic women being a "hot piece of ass" are tired and need to be shot down. What makes a person good in bed is their ability to connect with and please the person they are with; and that can be done by anyone of any race or culture.Aw! We would so trade vials of blood with this person. And then show 'em a terrifically mediocre time in bed. Baby. Beloved. The site VampireFreaks.com contains profiles of goth Latinos, where you can get to know people like 20-year-old Ivan, known to his friends as Blood-Master. Allow him to introduce himself:

WELCOME 2 MY GOTHIC-PARADE THE THING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT ME IS THAT IM IVAN THATS MY NAME.AND THAT I GO BY THE NICKNAMES BLOOD-SICKNESS AND THE GOTHIC-MASTER.IM SOME ONE IM VERY SILENT THATS WHY IM A GOTH.GOTHS ARE SUSPOSE TO BE SILENT IF YOU DIDN`T KNEW THAT.IM NOT MUCH OF A PARTY GUY SO I SUCK A LITTLE BIT.But aren't vampire freaks supposed to suck a lot? The Latino goth trend captivated even the likes of The New York Times, which has never met a Latino subculture human interest story it didn't like. They took a look at a group of goth Latinos who live and unlive in the Bronx. Like other goths, they often go by nicknames and have an over-inflated air of self-importance. God we feel really bad for our parents right now:
In America, Goths are usually thought of as white, middle-class and suburban. But the young people who hang out at Fun World live not on Long Island or in Connecticut but in the Bronx, and many of them are newcomers. Korpse, whose real name is Alexis Molina, was born in Puerto Rico. He and his friends, who shift easily between English and Spanish and go by so-called scene names like Selene, Zombie and Dexx, represent a new breed of Goth: immigrants or the children of Spanish speakers and of immigrants from Latin America. Korpse estimates that the Bronx is home to a hundred Latino Goths, who congregate in this corner of Fordham. This afternoon, roughly 30 of them are milling about the lounge for teenagers at the new Bronx Library Center, around the corner from Fun World. “We own this place,” says Kimberly Santana, 18, who wears pink rubber bands on her braces and goes by the name Hades Blood. “There are one or two hip-hop kids here. We let them live.”It's not surprising to us that there are more and more non-Anglo teens aligning themselves with the goth subculture. Depending on where you grew up and what cultural influences most resonated with you as you were busy forming a sense of identity, it's tempting to become a part of a community that both makes you feel welcome and accepted while alienated those in your community whom you have perceived as alienating you. Being Latino in America doesn't mean any one thing - we know that - but that can be hard to fathom if you're a young person feeling pressure from both society and your family to fit into a certain mold. And, of course, as with any group, there's also a fetishistic aspect to his subculture. A Google search for "Goth Latinos" bring up the question "Did you mean goth latina?" No, we did not. It's also nearly impossible to find images of goth Latinos, but goth Latinas seem to be posing all over the intertubes. Then again, some of us just really, really like occult subject matter. And look pretty hot in black.

This was long, no? Anyway, why would Latinos be more or less likely to be part of the adolescent "Goth" lifestyle? There were some Latin and Black Goths at my NYC public high school--they were simply Goths who happen to not be white. Goths (and most costume-heavy teen subcultures) seem so odd to me. Don't these people have parents? I really hope they grew out of it and their facial piercings closed without leaving scars.
ReplyI think Ivan and I should be friends.. I too am silent and boring.
ReplyMe too! And I am also curious as to what a Gothic Parade consists of. Sad clowns? Coffin floats? A marching band playing The Cure covers? Acne?
ReplySo... there's this Latino night club in Dallas called DMX. Two hosts tape a show there on the weekends and it airs on Tuesday nights on a local network. That show is where I met my favorite Goth(ish)Latina. I'd like for you to meet her as well: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l6DUtTaODIo&feature=youtube_gdata
