Cristian Castro Says He Had Autism As A Child, But Was Cured By His Mom

Cristian Castro believes he had autism as a child but that his mother, the incomparable Veronica Castro, helped him work through it. Oh good! The Latino community has been sorely lacking in its own version of Jenny McCarthy.
The singer maintains that, as a child, he had “certain autistic attributes.” That’s had. In the past tense. Explains Castro:
Autism tends to confuse people because there are people, like me, who can have an incredible inner world and a very reticent personality but, at the same time, can be very interested.
I’m here to support legislation and to support hundreds of miles’ worth of parents in the world who fight to overcome obstacles for their children.
Noble. But autism isn’t a childhood condition. It doesn’t go away once someone hits puberty. It’s a lifelong condition that many, many people struggle with on a daily basis with varying degrees of success depending on where they fall on the autism spectrum.
We’ve already noted that the Latino community is sorely lacking in knowledge about their options and resources when it comes to mental health. And even though we love that Cristian is speaking out publicly about autism, we’d hate to think he’s doling out misleading information or giving false hope to parents who think they can cure their children of autism, or that the condition will fade away as their child grows.
Be careful, Cristian.
