Enter The Guanabee Online Grito Contest!
15 September 2009, 2:12 PM. By Cindy Casares
It’s Mexican Independence Day tomorrow, so in celebration, we’re holding the first-ever, online grito contest (that we know of.) Just before midnight on the 15th of September in 1810, the Grito de Hidalgo, a cry for independence, was given out by Father Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla in Dolores, Guanajuato. It was with this cry that the revolution from Spain began. The next day, el 16, was named Mexican Independence Day and, ever since then, Mexicans like to give out a big holler when they drink tequila.
Now we want you to join the festivities by recording your best Mexican grito at the below website. Tomorrow, on Mexican Independence Day, we’ll pick a winner. To send us your grito, just click below where it says, “Record Your Grito Here,” and you’ll be whisked away to a page where you can either phone in your grito, record it straight into your computer microphone or upload a sound file. It couldn’t be easier. (Well, unless you have a bottle of tequila handy.) So hurry and get it in, y que viva Mexico, cabrones!
UPDATE: On September 15, 1821, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica jointly declare independence from Spain. Holy shit. Talk about a bad day for Spain. And a good day for you to declare your independence with a grito at the link below.
