A Latina Citrus Juicer. Why?

38443Behold: The “Latina Citrus Juicer.” Admittedly, we don’t quite know what to make of this product. What does juicing citrus have to do with Latinas? How did they come up with the name? Is it because it looks like a wee sombrero?

And what, exactly, is the description of the Latina Citrus Juicer trying to tell us about ourselves?:

The slanting angle of the juicer allows the product of your efforts to collect at one end, and the teeth around the juicer part help to filter out any unwanted chunky bits or seeds.

Hm.

Our dear friend, blogger and rocker-of-pearls Cruel Secretary, Twittered her feelings about this product rather succinctly:

picture-318One response to her Tweet seemed to opine that, perhaps, the juicer’s name referred to the “Latina-bearing-fruit” cliché embodied by Carmen Miranda:

The KMart near Herald Square has (or used to have–I haven’t been there in a while) a Latin Cookware section, featuring pots and pans and coffee cups with Southwestern ornamental motifs–a big hit in NYC, I’m sure. And one of the jewelry stores across from Macy’s Herald Sq (either Zales or whatever the other one is called, they’re chains) has an “Oro Latino” section with small pendants that say “Puerto Rico”. That’s much, much worse.

    • I always wonder whom the intended audience for these products might be. Do they expect Latinos to be, like, “These chiles really speak to me!” or is the consumer intended to be non-Latinos who think faux-rustic chip ‘n dip bowls help them look more cultured / happen to like diluted versions of Latin American pottery and jewelry?

As a Latina who likes juice and is juicy (figuratively speaking), I find this product was meant for me.
