Latinos Are All Up In AfterElton’s List Of 50 Best Gay Movies Ever
15 September 2009, 9:27 AM. By Alex Alvarez
AfterElton.com has compiled a list of the 50 Best Gay Movies. And many of them are great not because, well. They’re good movies (HEDWIG!), but also because they show that white Anglos aren’t the only people who happen to ever be gay. To wit:
4. Milk
Diego Luna’s character was creepy and needy to the max, but, hey. Visibility.
22. Philadelphia
Antonio Banderas portrayed Miguel Alvarez (Primo!), Tom Hanks’ character’s live-in boyfriend.
24. The Birdcage
There were some twinky Latino scattered her and there throughout the movie’s background. And thank the Baby Jesus for that.
41. East Side Story
We hadn’t heard of this movie before. But we’re adding it to our Netflix cue. Right. Now. Despite the annoying Female Friend character. Honey, it’s so tired that you call him honey:
47. Rent
The character of Angel was played by a Latino and then, of course, there’s druggie dancer Mimi Márquez. Who isn’t gay. But is in a gay movie, so. We’ll take her. (Seriously, are there only 3.5 movies featuring Latina or Spanish lesbians?)
But those certainly aren’t enough. So, we’ll throw our hat into the mix and respectfully propose the addition of the following queer films:
20 Centimetros
Kind of like the Spanish Hedwig, only with (a LOT) more angry inches. This musical follows a narcoleptic prostitute who yearns to make enough money to pay for her sex change. When she falls asleep, she dreams her way into awesomely choreographed musical numbers. Check it out:
La Mala Educación

We don’t have to explain this one, do we? Sloppy blowjobs, predatory priests, stolen identities, a sex change, death, love and sex. Classic Almodovar and the opportunity to see Gael Garcia Bernal looking so pretty you can’t stand it.
Y Tu Mamá También

You know the scene.
Itty Bitty Titty Committee

Feminism! Lesbians! Melonie Diaz! Itty bitty titties! We also really appreciate that the film’s synopsis describes Melonie’s character, Anna, as an “all-American girl.” We get warm fuzzies over stereotypes crumbling.
Sin Noticias de Dios

A butch Penelope Cruz ogling after schoolgirls? Why didn’t more people watch this movie?
Before Night Falls

Yeah, whatever. Johnny Depp’s ass bag. This movie has other things to offer, like the story of an out gay man in Communist Cuba who never ever compromised himself or his art for the sake of the government. Also, Javier Bardem lookin’ fine.
Reinas
This movie offers a look at Spanish mothers coming to terms with the weddings of their gay sons. It also features Kelsey Grammer and the stupidest trailer in the history of the world:
And, an honorable mention, just ‘cuz it deals with conservative immigrant families dealing with gay daughters…
Saving Face
A Chinese-American woman deals with whether her family will accept her new girlfriend and whether she herself will ever be ready to come out. Inspired a cheesy montage for you to cry over right now:
Ah, l’amour.
Any other movies you want to add, Guanababies?

wow…20 Centimetros is going on my netflix queu
first time i saw bad education, I was so confused. Then I watched it again and i was like oh i see what happen. I’m a little slow sometimes.
you forgot to mention Plata Quemada at 23. that’s a great movie, guys. i have to disagree with a bunch of these choices seriously, latter days and another gay movie?!? a friend and i watched another gay movie and didn’t laugh for about 45 min. i watched it with such horror and disgust and it’s a comedy.
as for almodovar, where’s law of desire (la ley del deseo)? bad education is good, but it’s just a gay marnie/vertigo.
Yeah, oops. It was hard to read through their list. And I haven’t seen the bulk of the movies they named, but, being a cover-judger, a lot of them looked like bad made-for-TV movies.
Potential post idea: Why do American gay movies generally lag so far behind foreign ones? Not even just in terms of their plots and character development. Even the cinematography on the trailers for most of these looks really cheap. It’s not fair that Gus Van Sant and John Cameron Mitchell have to produce all the (relatively) mainstream(ish) queer love stories that don’t look like something that’d play late night on Cinemax. Even Saving Face, which I mentioned here and thought was a sweet little movie, looked like it was shot for 12 cents. And another, similar movie - Kissing Jessica Stein - also looked very much like a made-for-TV movie.
