Our Favorite Patrick Swayze Clips

Patrick Swayze died yesterday, finally succumbing to pancreatic cancer at the tender age of fifty-seven. The svelt, dancing Texan was a favorite of Generation X for starring in really bad movies that made us cheer in the aisles when we were too young to know better. Also he was in The Outsiders which remains awesome. Here are some of our favorite pieces of his work.
The Outsiders
The Outsiders, which premiered in 1984, was a teenage girl’s wet dream. And Darry, played by Patrick Swayze, was the sensitive big brother every girl wished she had–even if we secretly wanted to sleep with him.
Red Dawn
Even as kids, we knew this movie about high school kids defending their town from the Russians was pure fantasy, but it totally worked because it combined our two favorite things: independence from our parents and our fear of Russia. To quote a line from St. Elmo’s Fire, (which came out the following year), “I enjoy being afraid of Russia. It’s a harmless fear, but it makes America feel better, and Russia gets an inflated sense of national worth from our paranoia.”

In this watered down, American makeover of Priscilla Queen of the Desert, Swayze played Vita Boheme, the most regal of the three drag queens in the film. While the movie was mostly filled with laughs, this tender scene always stayed in our memories.
Dirty Dancing
We actually tried to learn this whole dance routine when we were fifteen. As far as we’re concerned, it goes up there with the great ones.

um.. no Ghost? Next to Dirty Dancing that is my favorite Patrick Swayze movie.

the only “good” thing about this summer of death (credit: michael K) is that it will officially end in about a week.
i like point break and roadhouse too. but yeah, must be a chippendale of angels dance off up in the sky somewheres. thanks for this clip. i was trying to find it online a few weeks ago and just found lame ones that were slowed down and stuff.
