Telemundo To Air SuperLatina Episode On GLBT Latinos
23 September 2009, 10:09 AM. By Alex Alvarez
Telemundo series SuperLatina is set to air an episode today focusing on “a minority within a minority” - GLBT Latinos and the TV hosts with powerful lungs who love ‘em. Hostess Gabriela Natale told Dallas Voice what we can expect from the show (reruns are set to air on Sundays, so you can still have the opportunity to catch it if you’re a Telemundo-watching Texan):
- The Struggles and Dreams of the New Generation of Gay Latinos: teens from Youth First Texas Teens share what it is like to come out of the closet in the 21st century. The stories include a teen that came out of the closet when he was only eleven years old, a student who was abandoned in a hospital by his mother when she learned that he was gay and freshman in college that remembers the years of harassment from teachers and students he had to endure in high school, among others.
- Preventing Teen Suicide: Valiente President Fernie Sanchez explains why gay teens have four times more risk of committing suicide.
- Parents Advice: Counselor Zoriceli Davila has tips on what to do if you son or daughter comes out of the closet.
- Accountant by Day and Drag Queen by Night: Kaliente personality Nikki Lauren shares step by step the transformation.”
And here’s a peek at the episode:
We’re going to try and watch the show if we can find it somewhere online but, based on the synopsis and preview, our only immediate concern is that, as with many shows and documentaries about being queer and Latino, there don’t seem to be a lot of lesbians or bi girls included. Are there simply less queer Latinas than Latinos? A quick scan through NY’s W4W personals says you are all in the Bronx or Brooklyn looking a boo or a wifey. What gives?
In any case, we’re happy this episode aired. Were any of you able to catch it? If so, what’d you think?
‘SuperLatina’ episode about LGBT Latino issues airs tomorrow morning on Telemundo [Dallas Voice]
