Last week, Puerta Abierta a la Diversidad opened its doors to gay retirees in Argentina, making it the first retirement center specifically for queer people in their golden years to exist in all of Latin America.
The center is the brainchild of psychologists Graciela Palestra and Silvina Tealdi. They decided to open the facility after hearing stories from gay men and women in their 60s and older, who talked of having to face a unique set of obstacles, especially if they happened to come out late in life.
Some who frequent the center, like Norma Castillo, who happens to be the center's president, realized they were gay after having been married and having had children. Norma, however, is now at a place in her life where she's settled into her orientation, along with her girlfriend, Ramona Arévalo, and a dog and some paintings and, sigh. This is coming dangerously close to transforming into a heartwarming holiday film for the entire family:
Others were unwilling to speak to cameras about their experiences for fear that they would be judged or ostracized.

ReplyAw! This is so great! I love this story. On a side note... I noticed that those cute G-bee Chochas were not here last week. Are they in Argentina?
ReplyYes. But they will be back this week; don't fret.
ReplyGood to know. I was afraid we'd lost them to a certain Argentinian retirement home.
