Depeche Mode Confuses Peru For Chile In Classic Rock Star Moment

Dave Gahan, the lead singer of Depeche Mode who shouldn’t be alive after all the drugs he’s consumed, managed to thank Chile Tuesday for being a great audience–in Peru. Or at least, that’s how people are marketing this video in which he says, “Arghghrhgh.”

Dave joins a long line of rock stars who have thanked the wrong location for being so kind. Let’s roll the tape:

Britney Spears, “What’s Up, Sacramento?!!!” We Don’t Know Cuz This Is San Jose, Bitch.

Britney Spears greeted Sacramento while she was on stage in San Jose this spring. A commenter on the YouTube page for the video says she did the same thing in Manchester–thanking London, not Sacramento. Those would be some GOOD drugs.

Barack Obama, “Thank You, Sioux City! Uh…Sioux Falls!”

Barack Obama, political rock star, thanked Sioux City during his arduous campaign for the presidency, when he was actually in Sioux Falls. Oh, come on! You people want perfection.

Will.I.Am sings, “San Josaaaaaay!” in “San Franciscoooo”

San Jose got it’s revenge for the Britney Spears debacle when The Black Eyed Peas’ Will.I.Am accidentally sang, “San Josaaaay,” during their first number at the Out Lands festival in SAN FRANCISCO this summer. Fergie corrected him by singing, “San Fransiscoooo,” but you can see the Oh Shit look on Will.I.Am’s face.

Kanye West “pulls a Spinal Tap” in Sacramento.

Kanye West gave Seattle several shout-outs while singing “The Good Life,” during a Bathing Apes store opening in Sacramento. Fans let him know how it made them feel via his website, where he apologized profusely for, “pulling a Spinal Tap.” Lulz:

So, chin up, Peru. Even though this is the third time since 2003 that you’ve been called by the wrong name–In 2004, Mayte of RBD yelled out “Long live Chile!” at a concert in Lima and in 2003, Alanis Morissette yelled out “Thank you, Brazil.”–Uh, yeah, actually we don’t know how you recover from that. Get some personality, Peru.

  1. Peru, Chile, is there a difference? Same goes for Paraguay and Uruguay, North Dakota and South Dakota, and Wal*Mart and the Gulag.

i really hope that comment was tongue in cheek. peru and chile not only have very different cultures and geographies, but have also had a lot of disputes that go back to the pacific war between chile, bolivia, and peru. it’s a pretty big insult to peru to be confused for chile.

      • I’m aware of the differences and the disputes. Same goes for the animosity for those in Argentina against those in Paraguay, and vice-versa. So, yeah, it was in jest, and in hindsight I feel pretty bad for making such a comment. I’m sorry.
