Gmail / Hotmail Phishing Scam Shows Latinos Have Uncreative -Albeit Sexy - Passwords
7 October 2009, 12:37 PM. By Alex Alvarez
So, you might be aware that thousands of Gmail and Hotmail accounts were broken into recently. You might be less aware, however, that the information used to gain access into accounts potentially reveals quite a bit about a certain segment of the population.
An analysis of the 10,000 phished Hotmail account passwords showed that 42% used only lowercase letters, 19% used only numbers, 22% used a 6 character password and 21% used 8 character passwords.
Of the top ten most commonly used passwords, half are either in Spanish or use a Spanish name. And a very sexy Spanish name, at that. Take a look:
- 123456 - 64
- 123456789 - 18
- alejandra - 11
- 111111 - 10
- alberto - 9
- tequiero - 9
- alejandro - 9
- 12345678 - 9
- 1234567 - 8
- estrella - 7
Thank you, internet.
But, seriously: ARGH! INTERNET LATINOS! GET IT TOGETHER!
We know that, obviously, this isn’t necessary representative of all Latinos on the internet, but, you know. It’s not exactly great for PR. Then again, just because the passwords used were Latinoesque does not necessarily mean they were created by Latinos. We know of several skinny white boys scattered across the globe who very likely have #3 as their password. You are welcome.
Luckily, because we are smart about computery things,* we have a super-impenetrable password that no one will ever be able to figure out. It is: iLoveJenniRivera4evaSukkaz
Oh. Poop.
*No. We are not. OMG. We plugged our headphones into the wrong slot and now the entire fucking office knows we were watching Japanese children’s television programming involving singing about various breakfast foods and listening to Lady GaGa. Jesus Christ. Learn from our mistake, plz.

We had similar problem but on a much smaller scale. Turns out most of the people involved had the same password which was “password.” Lame.
I’m guilty of that lameness. It’s just so easy to remember.
i use the same ass password or some variation of it for everything and i still forget it sometimes.
my sister on the other hand… her passwords are very similar to the examples above. now she is not computer literate in anyway. [oh hi lala i hope ur not reading this]
