13 October 2009, 11:00 AM. By Alex Alvarez
If you’ve ever asked a Mexican whether it’s cold enough for a chaqueta or asked a Cuban to pass a bollo at dinner, you’ll know that Latino slang terms can vary from country to country, region to region, generation to generation, a reality that often results in embarrassing situations. Guanabee Glossary is our attempt to teach you Latino slang and save you from looking like a weird-ass fool in mixed company. Enjoy it, cabrones.
que bola
[keh boh-la]
Typically used among Cubans, this phrase, used as an informal greeting, is equivalent to “What’s up?” or “What’s happening?”
¿Que bola, mi socio? Cuéntame el chisme.
What’s up, man? Tell me all the gossip.

Wow. A long time ago, when I was but a wee tyke living in the third world, there was a sort-of popular pop song that included the term “que bola?” and I thought it was so vulgar. My friends and I would giggle everytime we heard it. I was, like, 8 years old or something, so you know. It was at least age appropriate. But now I know what it means! Thanks!
