Katy Perry Is Worried About Introducing Russell Brand To Her Evangelical Parents: Can You Relate?
13 October 2009, 9:39 AM. By Alex Alvarez
Warbler Katy Perry is gearing up to introduce her new boyfriend, comedian Russell Brand, to her Evangelical Christian parents, pastors Keith and Mary Hudson.
When we first read this we thought, “Haven’t they only been dating for like a hot second?” and then, “Oh.” We can totally relate. It’s important for us to introduce whomever we’re dating to our parents before it gets too serious. It’s not that we need our parents’ go-ahead or permission, per se, but we do value their input and, often, they can see red flags where we cannot.
And then, of course, sometimes we need a gentle reminder that it is very difficult for people with conflicting value systems to have a relationship. Not impossible, mind you. But difficult. Another thing to which we can relate. So while we’d like to pretend that one’s religion doesn’t matter when selecting a partner, the values and outlook determined by one’s belief system - even if that belief system amounts to one eschewing organized religion - does color their views on life and their interactions with others.
And we’re well aware that many of our generation’s parents and grandparents hold fast to their religious beliefs in a way that goes beyond being culturally Jewish or Catholic by tradition or Protestant by default, just to name a few. So we wonder who else can relate to being nervous about whether one’s family will approve of or accept a partner who is of another faith.
That said, it’s not like Russell, who considers himself a follower of Hare Krishna, doesn’t belief in God. In fact, we think he and Katy’s parents might have a few things in common:
