lie-to-me-cancun Last night, the Fox drama, Lie To Me went to Cancun where the world’s leading deception expert, Dr. Cal Lightman (played by Tim Roth), analyzed the nervous ticks of lying Mexicans. In this fourth episode of the show’s second season, Cal is on vacation–for the first time in six years–when an agent from the American embassy shows up, poolside, to ask for his help finding an American woman who went missing from a bar the night before. But why isn’t the United States government doing more to help? “More than 200 Americans have gone missing in Mexico in the last two years,” says Lou the diplomat, “but unless it’s some pretty, blonde teenager, no one even wants to talk about it.” Tell us about it, Lou.

There’s just one problem with this case. All of Cancun seems in cahoots to keep anyone from finding out the truth about this woman’s disappearance. Cue the liars! (The biggest lie being that bartenders in Mexico won’t serve a teenager alcohol.):

We bet they’re NOT closing the bar for restocking. These lying Mexicans are impenetrable! Better call in for reinforcements. Cue Ria Torres. The sexy Latina from back home who is one of the rare “naturals” in the field of deception detection, with a raw, untrained–some might say indigenous–ability to read people.

Did we mention she’s hot as balls? Do Latinas come any other way? Which may be why Canadians are sneaking over to Mexico to hire egg donors for their babies. Is it really illegal to buy human eggs in Canada? What gives, Canada? Anyway, turns out the missing American lady was part of an egg deal gone bad. Something we learn thanks to Cal and Ria shaking down the unethical Mexican doctor, (is there any other kind?), running the egg scam.

But even Cal’s deception detection expertise is no match for the ethical vagueries that comprise every Mexican bureaucracy. In the end, Cal and good Mexican detective Molina must admit their powerlessness over the Cancun law enforcement system.

And thus ends another episode of Renegade Crime Investigator With A Heart Of Gold.
