Dia De Los Muertos: Mercedes Sosa Has Died
5 October 2009, 11:47 AM. By Alex Alvarez
Argentine singer Mercedes Sosa, also known as “La Negra,” died at the age of 74 from kidney disease in a Buenos Aires hospital early this morning.
Sosa is best known for for singing songs related to the “nueva canción” movement, which combined traditional Latin American folk music with rock influences and often included political lyrics or themes.
Her music and voice were popular both in Latin America and internationally, seeing Sosa perform shows at Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, the Sistine Chapel and the Roman Coliseum.
Here she is performing “Gracias a la vida:”

the mama texican, and legions of others will definitely be singing her praises. RIP.
Oh sad…she has a song (”Balderrama”) on the soundtrack of Soderberg’s Che movie. I have it on my ipod, it’s pretty good. I didn’t know who she was or that she was in her 70s. Interesting.
