shilohPerhaps one of the most popular blog posts ever featured on Guanabee was on the story of a little girl named Shiloh Pepin - the “Mermaid Girl.”

Shiloh has born with “sirenomelia,” a condition in which her legs are fused together. This led to many digestive and waste management complications as she had only one, partially working kidney and no lower colon. Surgery might have helped, yet Shiloh and her parents were hesitant over having her undergo the risky surgical procedures it would take to save her life.

Shiloh was the subject of a TLC documentary as well as a guest on The Oprah Winfrey show in September of this year.

Shiloh finally succumbed to kidney failure today. She was ten years old.

Leslie & Elmer: Althought I never had the honor of meeting you or your amazing little girl, I followed her story through TLC, and like millions of others, grew to love her and hope for her future. Her indomitable spirt and infectious giggle will never be forgotten. May God bless and comfort you at this very sad time, and may He hold you in His loving embrace. Please don’t ever doubt that your precious, beautiful daughter was, and will remain, and inspiration to many.

Rest in Peace sweet Shiloh. Your work here is done.

I was always cheered when I watched Shiloh on tv… such a bright little spirit with a glowing optimistic outlook on everything. As a mother to 6, I suffer with the family in their loss. Please keep her bright, adorable smile in your heart, her cute laugh in your head and know your daughter touched so many lives. The weeks and months ahead will be sorrowful, but Shiloh will always be with you both.

I’m so sorry about little Shiloh. My mother and I watched her documentary, and cried as she learned how to swim. She was brilliant, witty, sweet, and so optimistic about everything in her life. Her memory will live on in our hearts. She was so lucky to have you as parents; someone else may have just given up on her. Thank you for the gift of your child, she was unique in the truest sense. She’s now swimming with the angels.

Everyone knwe she was going to die. It is sad that they wasted two kidneys on her when there are so many other people who’s only medical problem is that they NEED a kidney and who can live long lives with a kidney transplant. This little girl did not even try to take care of the kidneys she was given. At least now her dead beat Dad can go to work like the rest of us. I’m just upset that 2 kidneys were wasted on someone who was not going to live long.

I can understand your anger; perhaps you or a loved one is awaiting a kidney. But this forum is not the place to share that anger. Shiloh was a very brave little girl and her parents are certainly grief=stricken. Your post must be very hurtful to them. I hope they don’t see it.
