Modern Family Recap: Episode 5
22 October 2009, 11:35 AM. By Alex Alvarez

On this episode of Modern Family, the whole crew got together for a good ol’ fashioned BBQ and football game. Whether they liked it or not.
We open with Gloria’s family finishing up their breakfast and learn that Manny, like many Latino children, is raised on coffee in place of mother’s milk. When asked by his stepfather why he’s drinking coffee, he answers, quite matter-of-factly, that ”It’s my culture. I’m Colombian.” Yes you are! Now, come. Live in our pocket forever.
Another little cultural exchange between father and son occured when Manny points out that his stepdad, Jay, talks at all his football games, to which Jayreplied, “For one thing, it’s called soccer.” Silly pop! Also, look how cute Manny looks with his little coffee:

Now, contrast him to this child, whom we do not much care for:
Yeah. Team Manny.
Cam and Mitchell endeared themselves to us further by noting that they had once gotten very much into pickle-making until they became “the weird guys who gave everybody pickles.” We were picklers, Mitchell! Also: Were you aware that gay men can be into football? Mind-boggling, we know.
Now. Conflict time! Luke, the terrible child who seems to enjoy being naked and putting dangerous objects in his mouth (he’s going to love college) got into a fight with Manny. Our Manny! Parents were called in and - Hey. Did you notice that no one on this show works?

The fight between the two boys served to bring up a long-simmering rift between Claire and Gloria. When the boys’ principal said “it’s tough when one’s a little different,” both women thought he was referring to the other’s child. This gave Claire a nice opportunity to make fun of Gloria’s accent. Charming!
As Cameron and Mitchell prepare to watch the big game, we get to see how well these two characters play off one another. Of all the couples on this show, these two seem most seem to genuinely like one another. Mitchell, who is trying to get into football in order to please Cameron, grew excited when he misheard Cam mention that the “ascots” are an important part of the game.

Over at Jay and Gloria’s house, Cool Dad made an effort to get Luke and Manny to resolve their differences. Also, Sofia Vergara wore an awesome dress and Clarie was passive aggressive as the two women shoved their pies in each other’s faces. So to speak. It was revealed, by Manny and Luke, that Claire’s problem with Sofia lies with her believing she’s a “coal digger.”
Awko taco…

Claire stuck her foot further into her tightly pursed mouth by mentioning that Gloria was hot and Jay, her father, was… eh. This somehow culminated in Cool Dad wearing Gloria’s underwear:

Jay felt insecure and asked Cameron and Mitchell whether they, as people who were ‘practically girls,” found him hot. Mitchell felt his father was “ruining gay” for him. Cameron, however, felt Jay was a solid 9. So. That was kind of sweet. Gloria agreed to forgive Clarie if Claire agreed to jump in the pool with all her clothes on.
And then everyone jumped in! Family Fun Time!
So. It was cute. Cameron, Mitchell and Manny definitely remain our favorites, and we still cringe when people make fun of the way Gloria speaks. But what’d you guys think?

CANNON BALL!!!!!!!!!
I thought it was cute. My GF watched it for the first time last night and found it really funny.
Gloria is so smoking hot, she can speak any way wants to. (also her accent is hot, so there you go)
If they would actually let the girls put their “pies in each others faces” I think we’d have a sweeps WINNER. No?
First it’s everyone getting wet in the pool and jumping up and down. You have to build up to pie gradually and with the right soundtrack. But I have hope it’ll come to that.
I’ll stream the ep. to see it a second time, but the ridiculing of Gloria’s accent was just a passing moment. And it could be seen an INTENDING to portay Claire as being crass and insensitive at that moment.
Ms Vergara was, of course, HYPNOTICALLY hot in that dress. Additionally, she and the writers are taking her character beyond the stereotypical Latina spitfire. And while Sofia’s dramatic acting wasn’t the best in bit-parts in “Dirty sexy money” and other shows, it’s improved and affecting here.
As for the pool scene: it bordered on being sitcom-cheesy. Last week there was the sentimental moment of Dylan’s speech, leading to his singing “in the Moonlight” and just when you think things are getting too sappy, the song takes a hilariously innapropriate turn, pulling the scene back from the brink. Well, there was no such moment in the pool scene. But that’s okay- the show’s still 99% sitcom-corn free. I hope they keep up the quality, and Kudos to Sofia!
HYPNOTICALLY hot in that dress? Christ, I have to start watching this show again.
Definitely my favorite episode of the season so far. Solid laughs throughout and the decent storyline.
The “how exactly is she your girl?” line made me lol. I love cool dad and he was on his game this ep.
I liked Ty Burrell’s acting even when the character Phil was “merely” the dad straining to be cool with his kids. But I like the additional depth he had in this ep. where he takes the initiative to help the women patch things up.
Sofia Vergara is still hot. I’ll get to downing these episodes later this week.
There’s a kitchen conversation in this ep. with Gloria and Claire, and Phil is in the background “refereeing” the talk. I just streamed it to watch it a second time, and Ican’t believe what a beautiful, spectacular, perfect woman Sofia is. Sure, she hasn’t threatened to beat out Streep for an acting Oscar, but she’s funny, and in this ep she has real dramatic moments where her improved acting makes it work.
