Yeah, Barack Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize. “I suppose I should get a prize for thinking about making a sandwich last night,” one internet commenter said. Because, hey, why should Obama get a peace prize for just talking about peace? Dammit, the first black man to overcome 233 years of racism in America and get elected president hasn’t achieved world peace in ten months. We want our money back!
Listen, haters. The Nobel Prize for Peace is given to people, at a crucial time in their work, so that the money can further encourage their success. But, beyond that, we’d argue that Barack Obama’s having gotten elected president will do more to positively affect the psyches of future generations than any wars he might end during his term. In other words, you all sound like Kanye right now, so shut the fuck up. It’s embarrassing.

Being black and elected president merits the nobel peace prize? Give me a fucking break. Yes, Obama being elected president was a significant shift in this country, but that fact in itself does not merit recognition for further propagating peace in this world. Giving him the award for that reason cheapens it for other past winners and lowers the overall standard of the award.Rigoberta Menchu, Jimmy Carter, yeah they deserved the award. Obama? Hey I voted for the guy but he hasn’t done or accomplish anything thus far to merit the award. This cult of personality is getting a bit extreme. What next? Sweeping the oscars? Maybe they’ll hand him all the olympic medals for the 2012 olympics.
Agreed. The Nobel Peace Prize is a fucking joke. Al Gore shouldn’t have got it either.
and who ever said the Nobel Peace Prize wasn’t a joke? all awards are jokes, by and large. They’re all political.
100 years from now, the accomplishment of having gotten elected will be seen as far more groundbreaking and influential on us as a human race than anything else Obama might accomplish during his administration because ending a war? other people have done that.
The Nobel Peace Prize isn’t a prize for any groundbreaking and influential accomplishments. It’s a prize for promoting peace on a grand scale. Who is ramping up attacks in Afghanistan? Who continues the war on drugs? He won it for promoting diplomacy? Shit, should have given it to Deepak Chopra. Or Juanes.
Duh, i meant groundbreaking and influential in the realm of peacemaking. if you can’t see that, i can’t help you.
“Yes, Obama being elected president was a significant shift in this country” To all the people that think he has done something amazing simply because he is black and has “overcome” racism proves america hasnt changed at all and he hasnt overcome anything. The nobel now means nothing in a world were u give trophys out to kids who lose games and people who do not deserve it. what ever happened to try harder next time?
Let me get this straight: Because I and others like me remark on the significant accomplishment of something that nullifies it? So, when everyone marveled at the first man on the moon, that automatically meant we hadn’t actually gone to the moon? Got it.
I think we’re on the same side here in terms of the impact of Obama’s election, but as Alejandro pointed out. he’s not propogating peace. Sure, he’s pushing for unity within the international community, or as the wiki page explains, “for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples.” That’s all fine and dandy, but that’s the vaguest motherfucking reason to give someone a peace prize. Again, I’m not disputing that he has changed the sociopolitical and race relations landscape in this country, but his actions haven’t done shit to promote greater peace on earth.
Why don’t you shut the fuck up and let Alex do all the writing. You old fart.
why don’t you come over here and smell my old farts?
oh snap! haha. I LOLed. PS, all the ‘guest’ comments are not from the same person, cuz otherwise that fool (this fool? oh shit, meta!) would be one damn crazy schizo.
We know. We can see email and IP addresses. We know you’re not a crazyface.
oh, that makes sense. once again logic makes me look like a fool. whomps.
Although I agree with Cindy’s take on the progress that Obama represents, I still don’t see how this warrants a prize, especially with the already mentioned continuing war in Afganistan, which doesn’t constitute peace by any stretch of the imagination.
sorry cindy. i agree obama has accomplished great things, but i for the life of me cannot understand why he would win this award, no matter which way i slice it.
i almost feel it’s a spit in the face to the other candidates. i mean, these are people who’ve actually fought for peace throughout their entire lives, people who’ve had to endure hardship over their beliefs, people who’ve actually achieved something tangible when it comes to ending war and strife. people who serve as real inspiration when it comes to promoting peace, both on a local and world scale.
i can’t help but feel this cheapens the award.
You realize, he could get killed for being the first black president, right?
i’m not even sure what’s that supposed to mean. neither here nor there. any president risks getting killed, really. explain to me what that has to do with the peace prize.
GO, CINDY, GO!!! RAAAAAR!!
ps- he should win just for being a mega babe! ’nuff reason.
I’m totally with you on this one Cindy — to all the haterz including the media who has been scrutinizing the decision since it broke… Enough already!
Whatever happened to supporting people who bring us hope and a breath of fresh air?
How does Obama actually do that? By intentionally fucking up the climate negotiations on the path to Copenhagen? By escalating the Afghan war? By protecting war criminals, ensuring they’ll never face prosecution? Or by continuing Bush policies when it comes to permanent detention, rendition, and other civil liberty issues?

How the hell is that hopeful or a breath of fresh air? Not being Bush is not good enough, especially when he continues so many of the most disastrous policies. And why the fuck do you get a damn Nobel peace prize even if that were true? Do you honestly think any award would be prestigious if they were given out on simple potential instead of accomplishment?
For fuck’s sake! Wake the fuck up! You should be telling Obama enough already. But, no, let’s keep up the illusion any president of the United States is a benign being who spreads hope and good cheer.
Yes, enough scrutiny. Enough criticism. Let’s join hands in a parade of intellectual laziness, lest we be labeled “haterz.”
Meanwhile, let me know when someone decides what to do in Afghanistan (especially if it’s going to involve committing 60K more of our troops in a situation that does not have a precisely defined goal), how and when we will end the situation in Iraq, how we are going to deal with Iran’s nuclear ambitions, when someone is going to make good on the Guantanamo promise, and whether anyone in this Administration has the courage and sense of justice to hold our own nation’s war criminals accountable.
Even if you end up deciding that he *is* deserving of the award, there clearly are valid reasons to examine and question the Nobel Committee’s selection. To shout down people who raise questions - and, yes, even criticism - is simply juvenile, intellectually lazy and bordering on sycophantic.
OK, OBAMA WON. AND YOU KNOW WHAT, DO NOT BLAME HIM. HE HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH GETTING THE AWARD, I.E., NOBODY AT THE NOBEL PRIZE COMMITTEE IS KISSING ASS. IT SOMES FROM A DIFFERENT COUNTRY AND HE WAS SIMPLY DEEMED AS THE BEST CANDIDATE. WHY? LET’S BE HUMBLE PEOPLE. WE WERE NOT THERE BEHIND THOSE CLOSED DOORS AND CLOSE MEETINGS. HE WON. AND YOU KNOW SOMETHING GREAT? NOW THAT HE WON IT, OUR PRESIDENT SOMEHOW WILL HAVE TO LIVE BY THAT HONOR AND MOST LIKELY HIS FUTURE DECISIONS (WHICH HE STILL HAS MORE THAN 3 YEARS WORTH OF OPPORTUNITIES) WILL CARRY SUCH WONDERFUL TORCH SORT OF SPEAK. I AGREE WITH CINDY. WE AMERICANS ARE LUCKY THAT NOW OUR PRESIDENT HAS BIGGER SHOES TO FILL AND THAT CAN ONLY BE A GOOD THING!!! (I BELIEVE HE CAN DO THAT, BY THE WAY). IT’S FUNNY, BUT PEOPLE WERE LAUGHING AT HIM BECAUSE HE DID NOT GET THE OLYMPICS AND NOW THEY HATE HIM BECAUSE HE WON THE NOBEL PRIZE (WHICH ALSO COMES WITH A $1,300,000.00 CHECK WHICH HE SAYS HE WILL DONATE TO CHARITY). IT IS GOOD FOR AMERICANS AND ANYBODY WHO NEGATIVELY REPLIES TO ME IS AN IGNORANT MEDIOCRE LOSER WITH A TINY USELESS BRAIN
try talking instead of yelling for a change.
you might also like to try making some sort of sense.
You don’t understand my comment because you have a tiny small brain. Get a G.E.D. first and then reply, OK? Sorry that I “shouted” but idiots like you need don’t hear well.
if you’re gonna try quoting, quote what someone actually said. small brain? projecting much?
The Nobel Committee is smarter than we think: by giving Obama this award they are putting the United States (via Obama) in the hot seat. Whatever the U.S. does now in the way of foreign policy will be viewed through this lens as will whatever praise and/or criticism that goes with it. Obama should have refused the award — graciously. By accepting it, he is placing the entire country (and not just himself) in the position of being scrutinized even more than we already are. The Committee knew full well what it was doing and its another way for Europe to stick it to the U.S. in an ingenious way.
may be. but by doing so they cheapened the award and belittled the work of a bunch of other, more deserving candidates, while adding to the “cult of personality” surrounding our president.
moreover, i can think of a handful of other world leaders who need the “scrutiny” you talk about to hold them accountable and make them follow through on their promises. but really, is that a reason to hand anyone an award?
Your theory sounds interesting but it is way too contrived and silly. Do you actually think this committee is trying to teach Americans a subtle lesson? You make it sound like this committee is an underground committee with European ulterior motives. There are so many conspiracists like you. There is clearly an epidemic in stupidity and ignorance.
Oops, I meant “idiots like you don’t hear well”.
The Nobel Peace Prize is *given.*
Stop arguing about nothing.
So uh, when are you planning to recant your post here douchebag?
Didn’t you hear, THEY TOOK THE PEACE PRIZE BACK!!! HAHAHAHAHA!!! first black man to “overcome” racism wins the peace prize and then it gets retracted. ha, always trying to bring down the brothas eh?
FUcking douche.
