Shenandoah, PA People Still Blaming Mexican For His Own Murder

shenandoah-paRemember Luis Ramirez the illegal, Mexican immigrant who was beaten to death in July of 2008 by some white teenagers in Shenandoah, Pennsylvania? Those kids were acquitted of the charge of hate crime, but there continues to be discord amongst the town’s inhabitants over the negative publicity they’ve received around the incident. As part of their look at what it’s like to be Latino in America, CNN posted a video  today of an interview they did there that was interrupted by a nosy neighbor lady who took it upon herself to tell the camera that the murder was not “racial” because if Ramirez hadn’t been in the country illegally, he wouldn’t have been murdered. DON’T YOU SEE, IT WAS THE VICTIM’S FAULT.

“It’s putting Shenandoah on the map for being a rotten town,” says the nicely dressed lady who doesn’t think giving her name is important. “If you’re here illegally, and you don’t want any of these problems,” (”these problems” being your own murder), “go back, get the green card and come back.” This line of thinking is interesting when you consider a poll CNN recently did found that one in five Americans assume Latinos they don’t know are here illegally.

  1. This is truly sad. If immigrants from Latin America are able to make it this far north, into the United States, I’d suggest keep on going until you get into Canada. I’m not saying you won’t be assaulted there, but at least the Canadians will apologize afterward.

Gosh, these things are so utterly depressing. I saw some of the “Garcia” clips on the CNN site but missed the actual telecast of the first “Latino in America” special. Representations of Latinos in the media are always so problematic.

Even the poll in the last clip is depressing. Given the fact that all these racist misconceptions about Latinos and their immigration status and legal status are based on bigotry and irrationality, there really is no amount of government-issued statistics that is really going to change some people’s ignorance.

What’s so memorable about this one death amonst so many racial killings is how all the “aw.. shucks” townpeople seem to be defending the teenage killers as “Good Kids.” Sorry, good kids don’t kill. If these kids had been black, they would have been tried as adults and given decades of internment, not just a couple years. The real shame is the justice system failing to treat the murderers for what they are.

We’re still waiting to see if the federal government presses civil rights charges. Are you listening Obama?

What gets me about the people in Shenandoah who are trying to justify what happened is that the victim’s immigration status is irrelevant. Those kids did not know that he was an illegal immigrant. They just saw a brown skinned, Mexican looking man walking down the street. So they killed him.

I blame Lou Dobbs and his ilk for what happened just as much as I do the people who murdered Luis Ramirez.
To me, its ironic that CNN would air this very admirable program while at the same time they sponsor Lou.
If you want to do something positive, contact DumpDobbs.com and contact CNN about getting rid of their cheerleader for ethnic hatred.
By the way, I would agree that illegal immigration is a problem that needs to be addressed, but in a sane, rational way. That’s not what Lou Dobbs or the lynch mobs at Shenandoah are doing.

great idea to contact DUMPLOUDOBBS.COM. I agree that Dobbs was one of the pioneer in raising the anti-brown sentiments in this country……… IF YOU WANT TO SIGN A PETITION TO GET A FEDERAL INVESTIGATION FOR THE LUIS RAMIREZ DEATH IN SHANANDOAH go to MALDEF. (Mexican-American Legal Defense and Education Fund) Just type in the word MALDEF and it will get you to thier site. There is a petition that will be sent to the proper federal agency to demand an investigation into the murder of Luis and the SHANANDOAH POLICE! Latino in American program on CNN said thiere were over 50 million latino-americans. You have got to feel the power and act now!

It’s understandable that you feel this way about “eye for eye.”
      And that might happen.
But it will only make things worse.
Nobody will win everybody will loose.
As Martin Luther King once said, In a world where “eye for eye” rules everybody will be blind.”
There’s got to be constructive things we can do with our anger.

the pics of these people look like poor trailer trash. can’t they sterilize them or something.I would never dress like that or have hair that looks like that not even when sick in the hospital.the whole town must be racist cause you know if they had gone to school killing peers at random they would have been tried as adults and locked away, but their redneck families probably praised them instead.I dont believe it would have made any difference if he had been legal they still would have done it,only maybe with a different result.Once they kill it’s that much easier to kill again so I wonder if their parents sleep peacefuly with killers in their home. esspecially when they anger these kids by not giving them what they want. oooohhh sweet dreams redneck fools.

perhaps the Shendoah resident who interrupted the CNN interview is just jealous because CNN is not filming a documentary called “White Trash in America”

  21. I am so repulsed by this storey but not surprised. Being Mexican(American) growing up in Houston,Dallas and living as an adult in cities like Phoenix,Denver,San Diego I forget theres other places that arent so accepting of Mexicans regardless of my legal status. I have actually traveled with my nonhispanic husband thru this area back in 2007 when I quit my corporate job because of my husbands salary at that time to take it easy. The point of me explaining my job,and spouses job is because we made more money then most majority people in that area ever will make in a year ,as far as quote and quote “status” as they see it. Will I went to the mall into Victorias Secret and was treated with such nasty discrimination I didnt get it at first but then was like…OOOO… got it cause am brown and at that “A Mexican” I didnt get upset because I really didnt feel I had to prove anything to them just left me with a dose of reality…..
