genthumb BREAKING UPDATE: 3:09 PM MST– Falcon Heene has been found. He was originally thought to be flying in a giant, mylar, helium balloon over Fort Collins, Colorado, but he was hiding in a box in the attic. Ha.

Earlier: A six year-old boy, whose name has not yet been released, in Fort Collins, Colorado, has taken flight–by himself–in a large, mylar helium balloon, or what his parents are calling a “homemade flying saucer.” This is the stuff of movies. Not shitty, jump in the pool and strangle your friends, internet movies, but honest-to-God, Steven Spielberg, 10 gillion-dollar budget, summer blockbuster with many, many promotional tie-ins movies. P.S. it looks like a jiffy pop/chef’s hat.

Scarily, this has never happened before and no one knows how to get him down.

UPDATE: Here is a live feed of local coverage of the balloon.

UPDATE 1:13PM MST: A sibling is reporting they saw the door to the balloon unlocked as it took off from the house, so it’s possible the boy fell out. :(

UPDATE: 1:15PM MST: The boy’s first name is Falcon, which is just ridiculous. School was closed today, which is why he was home. A small, National Guard helicopter is en route to the scene to see what they might be able to do. A Blackhawk helicopter may follow.

UPDATE 1:20PM MST: The balloon is 20 feet long, 4 feet high. A hot air balloon expert watching the balloon on television told CNN’s Rick Sanchez that, judging by the movements of the balloon, the boy may not be on board.

UPDATE 1:35PM MST The balloon just landed in an empty field. No word yet if the boy is on board.

UPDATE: 1:40PM MST Looks like Falcon is not on board the balloon. Rescue workers have deflated it. Also, officials say the Falcon’s dad is a, “weather chaser” named Richard Heene.

My first reaction was to laugh until I thought how fucking scared/cold that kid must be right now and then it really bummed me out. Hope he pulls through. :(

  2. something’s not right in the water in this story. my antenna went up as soon as i heard that this family was on reality tv & then it was the sibling that saw him get into the aircraft…
