modernfamilysofia_1251229674Sofia Vergara, super angel dream goddess, plays one of the main characters on a little show of which might have heard - Modern Family. We are not fans, but some people like it! on the show’s pilot episode, Sofia’s character, Latina Trophy Wife, describes her hometown in Colombia as being beautiful but famous for… how do you say?… murders

The line apparently got some viewers upset and it seems that Sofia, who is herself Colombian, had tried to talk to the show’s producers in order to have the line changed, but they wouldn’t budge. This inspired a bit of heated discussion among Escándalo TV hosts Charytin and Marisa.

Marisa felt the producers were scum and should have been more open to their Latina star’s input on what her Latina character would say. Charytin, meanwhile, would probably sell her left kidney, both big toes and her third nipple for a chance to be on a TV sitcom. So she doesn’t see why Sofia should complain about her dialogue and risk getting fired. Watch:

This is an issue that comes up often in the workplace: Do you stand up for yourself, put your foot down for what you believe in, and risk getting fired or do you leave your personal convictions at the door in a professional setting? Either way, we think it might benefit the show’s writers to be open to Sofia’s input about her character and the things she would or would not realistically say or do. There is so much that could be funny about her character without consistently reducing her to a caricature.

Luckly I’m in the construction industry. 90% of the people here ARE Latinos. So I’m good. :)

In my case, I express my opinion, respectfully and then whatever happens happens. Be it in my favor or not, at least I let my opinion be known and it does make a difference on how you’re viewed and perhaps with time, a nicer stance will be taken. If I felt personally degraded/harrassed by it then perhaps I would take a stronger stance by quitting or hitting up the ACLU or HR or something.

As a Colombian, I find the way that they portray Sofia Vergara’s character extremely appaling. There are already many misconceptions about what the reality is in Colombia, because of a small percentage of the population. Instead of trying to help improve the image of Colombia a little, this show has taken it upon itself to make it worse by using FALSE statements about the way Colombians live. It is very sad that Sofia feels that if she has to degrade her own country in order to save her job. She shouldn’t be put in that situation.
