"Who thinks Zelaya will be voted back into office???"

The de facto government of Honduras has agreed to let a vote in Congress decide on deposed Honduran president Manuel Zelaya’s restitution to office. De facto president Roberto Michelliti broke the news on television late yesterday while Zelaya spoke to the press to say that his party is satisfied with the accord and optimistic that his reinstatement is imminent. (Wouldn’t it be awko if it wasn’t?!)

The United States is, of course, taking credit for the agreement due to pressure they put on Micheletti when senior officials flew to Tegucigalpa, on Wednesday to let him know that they weren’t exactly going to recognize the results of November 29th elections if Zelaya wasn’t restored to office first.

“We were very clearly on the side of the restoration of the constitutional order, and that includes the elections,” Hillary Clinton told the press from Islamabad.

“I cannot think of another example of a country in Latin America that, having suffered a rupture of its democratic and constitutional order, overcame such a crisis through negotiation and dialogue.”

Well, good for everybody. Here’s hoping there’s no more murder, but this is the same congress that has been largely supportive of Micheletti in the past. Until the November 29 elections, there will be some sort of so-called, “power sharing” government. Negotiators for both sides are supposed to meet today to work out the final details of the accord which have not been released in writing.

Will the US take credit when Chavez spread his influence into yet another Latin American country? I am glad that the international community will recognize the Nov. election. But, I feel Zelaya will not step down in January. Wait and see he will muscle his way into another term backed HC… Hopefully, some semblence of stability will return to Honduras, although I doubt it.
